Canadian singer-songwriter and icon Gordon Lightfoot died on Monday. Leaving many fans and celebrity friends heartbroken.

The singer responsible for hits like “If You Could Read My Mind” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” passed away bringing tribute from people who felt the singer’s presence through his music.
Music journalist George Stroumboulopoulos wrote on Twitter, “He’s sitting on a mountain. He shared what he saw. For many people around the world, they know our story because of him. Calm down Gord. Gold forever.”

He also shared a video of the last interview he did with Lightfoot. Writer and TV author Mark Critch shares his own memories of the singer. “Gordon Lightfoot has left us. There’s something about Canada and the Gordons.. This is a photo of him with Gords friends Downie and Pinsent. Pinsent then draws the image. All gone now. To quote Mr. Lightfoot, “If you plan to face tomorrow, do it now.” #GordanLightfoot.”
Canadian native Kiefer Sutherland praised Lightfoot. “The world lost one of its great storytellers yesterday. Canada lost a part of itself. And I lost a hero. Gordon Lightfoot, may you rest in peace.”

Lightfoot died of natural causes Monday afternoon at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. He lived a long life, dying at the age of 84. His departure was confirmed by his longtime agent Victoria Lord.
Lightfoot rose to fame in the 60s with hits such as “Early Morning Rain” and “Ribbon of Darkness”. Lightfoot did not cross over to American success until some time later when he signed a contract with Warner Bros.
The singer has been an inspiration for many artists such as fellow Canadians Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. When he made it into the American scene, he later became a role model for talents like Bob Dylan who wrote about him in the liner notes of his anthology. “Every time I hear his song, I wish it would last forever.”
Lightfoot didn’t let old age slow him down. Towards the end, a film was made about Lightfoot.

Well wishes for Lightfoot and his family continued to pour in from the likes of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. “Rest in peace, Gordon Lightfoot,” he wrote and shared a photo of Lightfoot’s hit song, “If You Could Read My Mind”.
Author Stephen King wrote “Gordon Lightfoot is dead. He was a great songwriter and a great entertainer. The sun’s setting, you better watch out/If I catch you creeping up my back stairs.”
Fans of the singer shared their memories of how they found creative. “I grew up with my parents playing Gordon’s music & have tried to keep this incredibly talented Artist’s work here for years. His songs are stories, beautiful melodic stories. He left a lasting legacy.”
