Serena Williams Reveals REAL Reason She ‘Needed To Stop’ Playing Tennis Post-Retirement

23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams recently announced her retirement from the sport and teased a possible return in the future. The athlete previously announced his retirement and played with him in March earlier this month.

Although she did not win the match, Serena thanked her family, especially her father, who had a huge impact on her life and her impressive career. The star welcomed her first child, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., in 2017 with her husband, Alexis Ohanian.

In a recent interview, Serena talked about retiring from her favorite sport and how her “hands-on” approach to motherhood motivated her. He revealed that he wanted to spend more time with his family; however, the 40-year-old also hinted at the possibility of a comeback in the future.

Serena and Venus Williams joined actor/director-turned-interviewer Bradley Cooper in interviews for the A+E Network as well as History Talk for the History Channel. During the interview, the “A Star is Born” actress talked about Serena’s recent retirement announcement and what prompted the decision. Earlier this month, the 40-year-old was in New York to play his final match at the US Open.

Per Diversity, the retired tennis player said, “I just had to stop. I always say I want to stop when I’m playing really good tennis and winning and beating good players. For me, it’s really about what I want to do spiritually and spend time with my daughter and family.”

Serena went on to talk about how hard it was for her because of how seriously she took her duties as a mother. He continued, “I lost so many matches after I had the Olympia because it was so hard to be in the ring.”

During the interview, Serena revealed (per Diversity) that due to his time in tennis, he felt it was time for him to do something different with his life and focus on other things. “I think I’ve given so much of my life to tennis, all my life, that it’s time to do something different for me and also work on other things.”

The 40-year-old, however, teased that the door to tennis is not completely closed, and he can return to the court whenever he feels like it. “I think if I want to come back, I can definitely still come back,” added Serena.

During their time in the world of professional tennis, Serena and Venus have won several dozen grand slam tournaments. The siblings have also won multiple Olympic gold medals, and at different times, they were ranked No. 1 world in both singles and doubles.

Further in the interview, the three talked about how they managed to keep certain aspects of their lives secret despite being public figures. In Cooper’s finale, the Oscar nominee revealed that he sometimes has trouble leaving his Manhattan home.

When asked what he does at home, Cooper revealed that he spends most of his time with his TV. Further, Serena explained that she tries to balance her appearance so that when she does go out, it doesn’t cause too many spectacles.

The mother-of-one said, “It makes sure I’m out there enough, so it doesn’t really matter. [when I do go out]. The other day, I wanted to get something to eat, and I ended up staying at home. I don’t want to exaggerate. It’s important to step out enough.”

Serena has her final match before announcing her retirement at Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 2. The 40-year-old faced Australian Ajla Tomljanović in three tough sets; however, he lost the match.

After the match, the 23-time grand slam champion thanked his parents, especially his father, Richard Williams, for their influence on his career. He said per Many people, “I thank everyone who is here, who has been by my side for years, decades. My goodness, literally decades. But it all started with my parents. And they deserve everything. So I am very grateful to them.”

During the emotional moment, Serena continued to talk about Venus and praised her for enabling the 40-year-old to have such an amazing career. “I wouldn’t be Serena without Venus, so thank you, Venus. She’s the only reason Serena Williams ever existed.”
