Shocking videos capture moment car goes airborne, explodes on Rainbow Bridge at US-Canada border

Surveillance video captured the moment a speeding car suddenly swerved through a checkpoint on the US-Canada Rainbow Bridge on Wednesday — just moments before it erupted into a huge fireball.

At least one CCTV camera captured the vehicle soaring several feet in the air after apparently striking what sources said was a barrier near the checkpoint area on the American side of the bridge between Niagara Falls, NY and Ontario, Canada at about 11:15 a.m.

Moments later, a second video – believed to have been taken from a nearby US Customs and Border Protection building – showed a fireball exploding.

The explosion sent debris from a nearby security hut flying as thick smoke engulfed the area, the footage showed.

The vehicle was going up to 100 mph at the time, the source said, adding that the car was left broken into pieces after it landed in the fireball.

“All of a sudden, he went up in the air and then it was a 30 or 40 foot fireball,” witness Mike Guenther told WGRZ-TV. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

The two occupants of the car, whose identities have not been released, were found dead inside the vehicle, sources said.

A Border Patrol officer who was in the checkpoint at the time was injured in the explosion, and was later treated at a hospital and released.

Investigators believe the car was traveling from New York to Ontario when the driver, who was driving at an “unusually high rate of speed,” crashed into the median on the US side, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said at a news conference.

The explosion caused the closure of the Rainbow Bridge border crossing, as well as three others in the area as a precaution.

“Based on what we know at this time, there are no signs of terrorist activity in this crash,” Hochul said.
