Sia is peeling back the layers on her journey through her courageous struggle and road to recovery after divorce. Candidly, the iconic singer revealed her struggle with severe bouts of depression for three years following her split from filmmaker Erik Anders Lang in 2016.
Sia Talks Navigating Three Years After Divorce Blues
The 47-year-old singer recently chatted with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, where she opened up about how these “dark times” were a source of inspiration for her upcoming album, “Woman of Vision.”
After the host asked Sia about her creative process for the new project, the “We Are Born” artist revealed that she’s been sporadically writing “songs here and there for the last six, seven years.” The mother of two explained further:
“I got divorced, and that really took a toll on me. It was a dark time where I was like in bed for three years, uh really, really depressed. So I couldn’t do anything for that period of time .”
Sia explained how she got back into making music, saying, “And then I started again, just a little bit here and there, but it was really hard for me to get out of bed.” He continued, explaining how the songwriting gradually gained momentum, resulting in a collection of songs suitable for an album.
The “Chandelier” singer admitted, “I just rely on my management to tell me when we have something good enough. I don’t. I can tell when I think one is good. I think I can tell, but they tell me when we’ve getting, you know, 11 or 12 or 13 is pretty good. Which is really good.”
In case you missed it, the former couple dated when the “Breathe Me” singer rose to fame in the early 2010s. They married in a private ceremony at her home in Palm Springs, California, in August 2014.
Two years into their marriage, the Australian filed for divorce from the documentary filmmaker. He cited “irreconcilable differences” in the divorce filing for their split.
‘Cheap Fun’ Artist Explains Late Autism Diagnosis
In May, The Blast detailed how Sia opened up about her late diagnosis of autism, a revelation that not only shocked her but also her inner circle. This newfound understanding gave him a significant explanation for why he always felt a different touch.
Speaking on “Rob Has A Podcast” with “Survivor” Season 44 finalist Carolyn Wiger, the “This Is Acting” singer candidly shared, “For 45 years, I was like … ‘I need to put on my human suit.’ “
Sia went on to state, “And it’s only been in the last two years that I’ve become fully myself,” emphasizing that she’s also embraced sobriety. The songwriter expressed her joy in discussing this personal journey with Wiger, as she found a connection with the Survivor contestants, appreciating the unique characteristics that set them apart on the reality show.

After labeling what she once thought were the weird aspects of herself, the award-winning star took the time to embrace her true identity. He emphasized the importance of shedding secrets and shame, stating that true love and understanding can only flourish when open and genuine.
For the first time, Sia experienced a sense of being truly seen and, importantly, understood. In his words, “When we finally sit in a room full of strangers and tell them our deepest, darkest, most embarrassing secrets, and everyone laughs with us, and we don’t feel like pieces of trash for first time in life.”
The “Racing Extinction” actor mentioned finding his refuge of contentment. He stated, “We feel seen for the first time in our lives for who we are, and then we can start going out into the world and just operate as human beings and human beings with hearts and not pretend to be anything.”
Some fans are curious about when Sia found out about her diagnosis and why she didn’t go into detail. However, it should be noted that the “Beat Bugs” star previously created a film centered around autistic children titled “Music.”
The project faced criticism for not casting actors on the spectrum, which some saw as a missed opportunity for authentic representation. Sia responded to the backlash, defending her intentions by stating her “heart is always in the right place.” He urged critics to “watch my film before you judge it.”
