In 1976, Loretta Lynn’s biography, “The Coal Miner’s Princess,” was a national bestseller. By 1980, the book had been turned into a 1980 biopic that shared the same time. Lynn handpicked the “Carrie” actress to play her in the film, and the two became lifelong friends.
In a statement given to Deadline, the 72-year-old actress said, “Today is a sad day. The world lost a great man. Loretta Lynn is a great artist, a strong and resilient country music pioneer and a treasured friend. I’m heartbroken. I send my deepest sympathies to his wonderful family, friends, and loyal fans.”
MEGAAlthough Lynn was set on Spacek from the start, the “Badlands” actor was anxious to take on the challenging role. While he was still figuring it out, Lynn appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and told the world, “Sissy Spacek is going to play me.” After that, Spacek had no choice but to follow suit.
In his 2012 memoir, “My Extraordinary Ordinary Life,” Spacek detailed how much work he put into preparing for the role, including trying to imitate Lynn’s Appalachian accent, her speech patterns and her iconic singing style. Lynn wanted Spacek to sing in the film and helped him model his guitar playing as well.
Sissy Spacek is not alone in paying tribute to the late country music singer. Many country musicians took to social media to pay tribute to Loretta Lynn as well.
