The “Star Wars” series “Andor” has become the latest victim of an ongoing strike affecting both writers and actors in the entertainment industry.
The Disney+ live-action series, helmed by Tony Gilroy, stars Diego Luna reprising his role as Cassian Andor in the prequel series to the movie “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
‘Star Wars’ Series ‘Andor’ Pauses Production Due to SAG-AFTRA Strike

On Friday, Deadline was the first to report that the “Star Wars” series “Andor” had to temporarily halt production on season 2 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Although the series is reportedly just weeks away from wrapping production in the UK, production has been forced to hit the pause button following the SAG-AFTRA strike, which is ongoing without end.
The series, which is filmed at Pinewood Studios, will continue to attempt to film as much as possible without SAG-AFTRA actors, as some actors have agreements with Equity, the British actors’ union, and not with SAG-AFTRA.
According to Deadline, equity workers have been told they “risk being sued for breach of contract if they walk out in solidarity with American colleagues.” It’s unclear when “Andor” will be able to finish production, or if that will affect the scheduled August 2024 release date.
‘Andor’ Scores Eight Emmy Nominations

Earlier this month, “Andor” earned eight Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. Showrunner Tony Gilroy and actor Diego Luna both spoke to Entertainment Weekly just hours after the nominations were announced before the SAG-AFTRA strike began.
“That doesn’t happen often, where you can be a part of something that you really believe is going to be successful,” Luna said. “That equality doesn’t always happen in life, where the things you care about and put everything into also happen to connect with other people. And this show has connected in so many ways.”

“We made that first season through COVID, kind of hiding in Pinewood [Studios], without focus groups or any real audience,” Gilroy added in a separate interview. “When it comes out, we’re really curious about what people are going to say. The last 10 months have been a pretty solid affirmation of all the hard work put in by so many people, and this is just another chapter in that enjoyable process.”
“The challenge of this show is epic,” Gilroy continued. “The scale, the expense, the risk for Disney and Lucasfilm… And there’s a responsibility for the creators of the show to try and deliver and meet our deadlines and continue to achieve something. By the time we’re done, I think we’ll have made eight films. It’s pretty incredible.”
Diego Luna Says Season Two Will Be Different From Season One

Diego Luna went on to say that he feels that the second season will be different from the first because the final episode of season 2 leads to the beginning of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Luna said, “The confidence we have this season is different,” adding, “It’s nice to go on set knowing what you want to do and knowing someone out there cares about it, you know?”
Tony Gilroy has been in “exile” from the show since the Writers Guild of America Strike began. “I was really an outcast from the show,” he said. “I hope people are aware. And when I say ‘people,’ I mean companies. I hope they realize and realize that actors and writers are trying to save this industry. It’s time for people to wake up and realize that this amazing industry that America built — one of the greatest industries ever created — is in danger.”

Gilroy said, “I really hope that smarter leaders will succeed. This needs to be resolved to save the industry.” Luna also compared the future of “Andor” to the future of the entertainment industry as a whole.
“It’s hard to talk about the future of the show without talking about the future of our industry,” Luna said. “I really hope that things can be resolved and demands and needs can be heard, and that we soon wake up in a healthy industry and move forward together.”
“Andor” season 2 is expected to debut in August 2024. It is unclear whether the ongoing writers’ protests and the SAG-AFTRA protest will cause the season 2 premiere to be delayed.
