Veteran film director, writer, and producer Steven Spielberg praised Tom Cruise for his blockbuster sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The pair met at the Academy Awards luncheon, where Spielberg poured his heart out to the actor, whose performance in the film earned him a “Best Picture nomination” at the prestigious award.
The director of “Jurassic Park” recently expressed his satisfaction at turning down the director’s offer for “Harry Potter.” Spielberg and Cruise have had a good working relationship over the years, working on both 2002’s “Minority Report” and the 2005 film “War of the Worlds.”

During an appearance at the annual Oscar luncheon, Spielberg praised Cruise for his performance in the blockbuster.
In a viral post that spread on Twitterthe “Schindler’s List” director expressed his appreciation to Cruise for his performance, calling him “the savior of theater.”
“You saved a** Hollywood,” he told Cruise at the event. “And you might have saved theatrical distribution,” adding, “Seriously, ‘Maverick’ might have saved the entire theater industry.”

The couple can be seen hugging and shaking hands during lunch, according to Insidertakes place every year just before the Oscars and allows candidates to meet, network and take photos.
Spielberg and Cruise both worked on the 2002 film, “Minority Report” and the 2005 film, “War of the Worlds.” Cruise starred as John Anderton and played Ray Ferrier in the latter.

follow PolygonJoseph Kosinski, who directed the film, explained that he had a short time to convince Cruise to star in it, revealing that he didn’t want to make it in the first place.
“So I read the script, I had some ideas, and Jerry Bruckheimer liked the idea. He said, ‘You know, you’ve got to pitch this to Tom live,'” Kosinski said.

He then pointed out that he flew to Paris, where Cruise was filming “Mission: Impossible” at the time and only got 30 minutes between preparations to pitch the project to him.
“And I basically had 30 minutes to pitch this movie, which I didn’t realize while we were flying. But when I got there, I found out that Tom really didn’t want to do another ‘Top Gun,’” he explained.
“It’s one of those moments as a director, you have one on every film, where you’re on the scene making the case for why this film should be made. I have 30 minutes to do it,” he added.
Kosinski later recounted the events leading up to when Cruise accepted to work on it, revealing that the actor picked up his phone and called the head of Paramount pictures, saying, “We’re doing another ‘Top Gun.'”

“Top Gun: Maverick” has now earned over $1.4 billion to date domestically and internationally, making it the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career.
It has also been nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, which is set to take place on March 12, 2023.

“The personal meaning of how the conflict between art and family will tear you apart happened to me later, after I had established myself as a filmmaker, as a working director,” Spielberg said.
He explained that he had to turn down a job that meant he would have to move to another country for over five months, which would keep him from being with his family.
“There are some movies I choose not to make,” Spielberg continued. “I chose to turn down the first ‘Harry Potter’ to basically spend the next year and a half with my family, watching my kids grow up.”
“So I sacrificed a great franchise, which today, looking back, I’m so glad I did, to be with my family,” he said.
