The “Stand Back” singer initially paid tribute to her close friend with an Instagram post. Nicks, 74, revealed she did not know McVie had been ill in a handwritten note. McVie’s family announced his death in a statement.
Fleetwood Mac would also release a statement, writing, “He is truly unique, special and immensely talented. He is the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life. We are very lucky to have had a life with her. Individually and together, we appreciate Christine very much and are grateful for the wonderful memories we have. She will be greatly missed.”
Nicks performed Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 introspective ballad “Landslide” in concert last night, on a co-bill with Billy Joel. She tearfully revealed to the audience how she “coped” with her friend’s passing after finishing the song; “Landslide” was the last song of the night.

The duo’s Fleetwood Mac bandmate Lindsey Buckingham and McVie’s ex-husband John both paid tribute to McVie. Buckingham and McVie collaborated outside of Fleetwood Mac, releasing an album in 2017.
Buckingham, 73, also posted a handwritten tribute, writing, “The sudden passing of Christine McVie is heartbreaking. Not only is she and I part of the magical Fleetwood Mac family, to me Christine is a musical partner, friend, soulmate, sister…”
Nicks also included the lyrics to Haim’s 2019 song “Hallelujah” in her tribute, revealing she couldn’t stop thinking about the song after hearing the news. Haim would comment on Nicks’ post, writing, “rip beautiful songbird [heart emojis] we love you stevie”
Nicks Honor McVie With ‘Landslide’ Live Performance
Footage of the performance was later posted to YouTube by fans.
Nicks broke down in tears in the middle of the performance, pausing to regain her composure. When he finished singing, he told the audience, “There really isn’t [inaudible] to say We just pretend he’s still here, that’s how I try to deal with it,” he concluded before joining his band members for a bow.
Fans took to Twitter to discuss the heartbreaking performance.
“We love and miss you, Christine. You are perfect, Stevie Nicks,” tweeted one concertgoer, sharing a photo of the stage; a picture of McVie and Nicks was shown on a monitor behind Nicks as she performed.
“You could see the pain in his eyes over losing Chris and Tom [Petty]. You know he’s also grieving the loss of his friendship with Lindsey. If you know Stevie at all, you know that his emotions make for some of his best music. Maybe he’ll grace us with another song about losing his friends,” a fan commented on the CONSEQUENCE thread about his performance.
“Stevie Nicks closed her set tonight with ‘Landslide’ which she dedicated to Christine McVie,” one concertgoer wrote in their tweet about the performance. She cried and said, ‘I have to imagine he’s still here. That’s all I can do.’ Such a beautiful and powerful moment.”
“That presentation was the highlight of the entire night,” tweeted one attendee. It’s amazing. Isn’t the group great?”
Nicks will also pay tribute to her late friend Tom Petty with a performance of her 1989 solo hit, “Free Fallin’.” Petty died of an accidental overdose in October 2017.
Fleetwood Mac’s landmark album “Rumours” continues to break sales records. The album, originally released in February 1977, was the fifth best-selling album on vinyl in 2022.
