‘Supernatural’ Spin-Off ‘The Winchesters’ Unable To Find A Home At A New Network

“Supernatural” series “The Winchesters” is reportedly unable to find a new home on a new network after being canceled by The CW earlier this year.

While star Jensen Ackles is trying to find a home for the new show through the #SaveTheWinchesters campaign, it looks like efforts to continue the “Supernatural” saga are proving futile, at least for now.

‘Supernatural’ Series ‘The Winchesters’ Reportedly Won’t Be Picked Up By Another Network

On Friday night, Deadline was the first to report that the “Supernatural” franchise would end, as “The Winchesters” could not be picked up by another network for a second season after being canceled on The CW. It was just one of several scripted series canceled by the network, as it shifted its focus to fixed programming.

Despite the cancellation, the Warner Bros. Television team is reportedly looking to establish a new home with another network. Since Max, formerly HBO Max, is owned by the same company as Warner Bros. TV, many hope the show will find a new home there, even though all fifteen seasons of “Supernatural” are available to stream from Netflix.

Jensen Ackles and his wife, Danneel Ackles, who both serve as executive producers of the new series, also have their own production company that has a deal with Amazon Studios. In the end, Max, Netflix, and Amazon Studios all passed on the second season of “The Winchesters,” according to Deadline.

The new series is written and executive produced by Robbie Thompson and focuses on the love story of Sam and Dean Winchester’s parents – John and Mary – played by Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly, respectively. The first season, and apparently the only season, was only thirteen episodes long.

To all of you who watch, follow, and support this story, THANK YOU. And to all those who bring this show to life…I couldn’t be more proud of what we all do together. But as they say…timing is everything. With a massive Network shift coupled with industry… pic.twitter.com/qqDD9WC0KA

On Saturday, June 3, Jensen Ackles took to Twitter to confirm the news that the show would not be returning for a second season, placing some of the blame on the current WGA writers’ strike. “To all of you who watch, follow, and support this story, THANK YOU. And to everyone who brought this show to life…I couldn’t be more proud of what we did together,” he said tweeted.

“But as they say…timing is everything. With a massive Network switchover coupled with an industrial strike…hello…it was an unfortunate time,” he continued. “Sleep well dear @WinchestersOnCW …until we meet again. Somewhere by the side of the road.” Fans had mixed reactions to the show, with some fans happy with the ending in season 1, while others felt that the spin-off “changed the story” too much from the original premise of “Supernatural.”

Jensen Ackles Previously Felt ‘Optimistic’ About Season Two

In May 2023, the “Dark Angel” actor told Entertainment Weekly that he felt “hopeful” about the possibility of “The Winchesters” getting a second season.

“I feel hopeful and I don’t know if that’s just my optimistic side, which I didn’t know existed in this capacity,” he said at the time. “I’ve moved more towards the curmudgeon, more towards what we all thought Dean Winchester would sink into as he got older. That’s just the Dean in me.”

“But I have this crazy confidence for this show and I think a lot of it lies in the energy that we find on set with this cast and crew,” he continued. “That crazy confidence is one of the reasons why this show was on the air in the first place, and I think it’s one of the few reasons why it needs to go on somewhere.”

The “Supernatural” actor also said that fans are “passionate,” adding, “I love about this fandom. I love that they’re so passionate about this world and this universe and these characters that they’re willing to go to the mat for a show like this. I think that speaks volumes, especially to those who are willing to listen and have the power to do something about it.”

During the same interview, Jensen Ackles revealed that he and Robbie Thompson have discussed a five-season plan for “The Winchesters” that they hope to implement. “Hopefully we can make it work,” Ackles said. “I just think there’s a way to keep this going and it would be a shame to let it go.”

“We talked not only about the story and where we wanted to take our actors, we talked about who we were going to bring home from the mothership,” he continued. “We’ve put together a lot of tricks to keep it up our sleeves and keep it interesting, not only for new fans but for returning fans as well.”

Looking beyond the five seasons, he added, “And then we don’t know what it’s going to look like after that but there’s definitely a way to tie this in like the possible return of Supernatural, which Robbie and I have been talking about. It’s something that Jared [Padalecki] and I’ve talked about, what it looks like.”

At this point, fans are still hoping that another “Supernatural” spin-off will be ignited in the future. Until then, all fifteen seasons of “Supernatural” are available to stream on Netflix.
