Sarandon is dealing with the aftermath of her controversial comments during a pro-Palestinian rally that led to her talent agency dropping her last month.
In a statement shared on Instagram on Friday, the 77-year-old actor acknowledged his remarks at the Nov. 17 rally in New York City and apologized for suggesting that Jewish Americans “get a taste of what it’s like to be a Muslim in this country.”
“Recently, I attended a rally with various activist groups who wanted to highlight the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza and called for a ceasefire. I wasn’t planning to speak but was invited to go up on stage and say a few words,” said Sarandon.
He continued: “Intending to convey my concern over the rise of hate crimes, I said that American Jews, the targets of increasing antisemitic hatred, ‘always feel what it’s like to be Muslim in this country,’ so often. subjected to violence. This expression is a great mistake, because it implies that until recently the Jews were strangers to persecution, when the opposite is true.

I deeply regret diminishing this reality and hurting people with these comments. It was my intention to show solidarity to the fight against bigotry of all kinds, and I apologize for failing to do so.”
The statement ended with the “Blue Beetle” actor pledging to continue promoting human values. “I will continue my commitment to peace, truth, justice, and compassion for all people. I hope we can meet with love and a willingness to dialogue, especially with those we disagree with,” he concluded.

Sarandon initially made her controversial remarks at a pro-Palestinian rally in Manhattan’s Union Square on November 17, during a protest against the ongoing Israel-Hamas War.
His comments drew criticism, including from American Muslim writer Asra Nomani, who expressed concern about minimizing the experience of American Jews.
Referring to X, Nomani criticized the Hollywood star, writing: “Please don’t minimize the American Jewish experience by purging the hell that it is for Muslims living in Muslim countries and vilify America for the life — and freedom — he offers Muslims like my family .”
She added: Go, live like a Muslim woman in a Muslim country. You will return to America and kiss the ground beneath your feet.”
Another user agreed with Nomani, writing: “Since Lebanon is a Christian country and the Muslim community living there is more free than anywhere else. They have the choice to wear the hijab and they have the choice not to wear it. He doesn’t understand how lucky we are in this country to have that kind of freedom.”
In a separate post, Nomani invited Sarandon to engage in dialogue with Muslim reformers and ex-Muslims, writing: “Well, I invite Sarandon to meet with Muslim reformers and ex-Muslims, like @YasMohammedxx @SoooMD @Raheelraza @DrZuhdiJasser and I and actually ‘engage in dialogue.’ We certainly do not agree with his alliance with Islamists and anti-Jews, anti-American haters.
