Suspected cocaine bricks covered in barnacles wash up on Australian beaches

It’s not the kind of white powder you’d expect to see on Christmas Eve.

Bricks believed by authorities to be cocaine wrapped in barnacles washed up on Australian beaches this weekend, according to police – who are warning the public not to open any packages they may find.

Seven packages – all suspected to contain cocaine – washed ashore between Newcastle and Sydney since Friday night, New South Wales Police said in a statement.

The first package was found by beachgoers around 8pm on Friday off the coast of Magenta, located about 65 miles north of Sydney.

“Local police attended and removed the barnacle-covered item, which was sent for further inspection and testing,” authorities wrote in the statement.

“Police have now been told presumptive tests showed the package contained cocaine.”

A crime scene was established leading to an “extensive search of the area” on Saturday and the discovery of three additional packages.

Authorities on Sunday searched beach stations and found “similar packages” at Manly, Avoca and Blacksmiths beaches.

Police are warning the public not to touch the barnacle-encrusted packages (pictured) but to call Triple Zero (000) after seven have washed up on beaches in Magenta, Blacksmiths, Avoca, and Manly since late Friday. All packages have been sent for further inspection.

Packages found so far “have a significant growth of barnacles covering the outer plastic wrapper,” police said.

Investigators have urged anyone who may have seen the same package to contact their local police.

“Police are keen to warn the public not to remove or open any packages and, if found, contact triple zero immediately,” they added.
