Swami Omkarananda was born as Sri Goshteswara Sharma, also known as Manoharan, in Perur, Coimbatore, on January 17, 1956 (in the Tamil month of Thai and Poora nakshatra). His parents were orthodox Ghanapaatigal Sri Vaidhyanatha Ghanapaatigal and Smt. Alamelu Ammal. After taking sannyasa diksha, he became known as Swami Omkarananda Sarawati. Swami Omkarananda attended Saraswati School in Perur for his schooling. He later switched to Perur Santhalinga Adigalar School, Madurai Sethupathi High School, and Madurai’s Ponnu Iyengar School. During his time in school, he won many music and declamatory prizes. He realized his calling for the brahmacharya when he underwent Upanayana samskara at the age of eleven in the presence of Sri. Jayendra Swamigal. From a very young age, he knew he belonged to the spiritual world and had a calling for sannyasa. He used to read a spiritual book by Sri Swami Chitbhavanandha, which further motivated and increased his interest in spirituality. As his interest grew, he would spend time on the banks of the river Krishna in Vijayawada reading spiritual books.
In 1979, Swami Omkarananda bid farewell to his home and meditated for 21 days on a hillock near Coimbatore at the Chidbhavananda ashram. While meditating, he made the decision to become a monk and received Diksha from his guru. Guided by his guru at every step, he soon became a Sanskrit Lecturer at Thiruvedagam Sri Vivekanandha College.
