Director Taika Waititi is still mulling over the idea for his “Star Wars” movie that was first announced three years ago.
Although the writer and director are not actually working on the script at this time in solidarity with the writers during the WGA writers’ strike, he shared an update on its progress.
Taika Waititi Gives Update On His Long Awaited ‘Star Wars’ Movie

During a May 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the “Thor: Love and Thunder” director indicated that, while he had great ideas for the story, he seemed stuck in “the middle.”
“I have a really good idea for that,” he said. “It’s like all movies, it’s this middle part. You’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ And then you see all the movies that are so great, you’re like, ‘Well, I guess they can’t meet smugglers with foreign partners.’”

In April 2023, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy spoke to Variety at Star Wars Celebration London and revealed that “Taika is still working” on the film.
“He wrote the script himself,” Kennedy said. “He really didn’t want to bring anyone else into the process and I don’t blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So we wanted to protect that and that’s what he did. But we will one day.”
His ‘Star Wars’ Movie First Announced On Star Wars Day In 2020

On May 4, 2020, Lucasfilm announced that Taika Waititi would be co-writing a new Star Wars movie with “Last Night in Soho” writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, but it appears that Waititi is currently working on the script himself.
Unfortunately for fans, it seems that little progress has been made on the film since then. When Waititi was asked by /Film if he could bring his signature style to the franchise in July 2022, Waititi revealed that the draft is still in the early stages of development.

“At the moment it’s still early, because I … still haven’t finished the script,” he explained. “I’m still trying to come up with ideas and I’m mostly in the open part of the process.”
“And when I write, I write down every idea I’ve ever had and then start sculpting it into something,” he continued. “But I’m still throwing everything against the wall now.”

However, in an interview with Total Film, he revealed that he plans to introduce a new character to the franchise.
“Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to grow, it has to grow,” Waititi said. “I feel like I’m useless in the Star Wars universe making a movie where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, that’s the Millennium Falcon blueprint, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandma.’”
“That all stands on its own, which is great, although I’d like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like a very small story,” he added.
Taika Waititi Doubts Whether His ‘Star Wars’ Movie Will Get Made

In a 2022 interview with The Wrap, he was asked if he had started working on the script. He replied, “Not this year.”
“I’ll be in New Zealand from August until the end of the year with ‘Our Flag Means Death’ and ‘Time Bandits’ and during that time I’ll still be writing,” he explains, adding, “I’m still trying to figure out what the story is.”

That said, in another interview with New York TimesWaititi expressed doubts that his “Star Wars” movie would be made even if he finished the script.
“I’m trying to write a ‘Star Wars’ idea at the moment,” he explained. “I’ll have to see how it goes, because once I submit it, that might determine when it’s made or if it’s made, even.”

However, he told Variety in March 2023 that he would like to star in his own “Star Wars” movie. The publication reports that Waititi “continues to work” on the “Star Wars” script and “will most likely participate in it as well.”
