Tanya Abrol is an Indian actress who gained popularity with her debut Bollywood film Chak De! India (2007) in which she played the role of Balbir Kaur.

Tanya Abrol was born on Wednesday, 8 January 1986 (age 37 years; as of 2022), and she hails from Abohar, Punjab, India. Her zodiac sign is Capricorn. She did her schooling at LRS DAV Sen Sec Model School, Abohar. In 2008, she completed her graduation in Economics and Political Science at MCM DAV College for Women, Chandigarh. Tanya was athletic since childhood and secured admission to college through sports quota. During her school and college days, she would actively take part in the extra curriculum activities. She used to play multiple sports but was mainly fond of basketball and judo. She talked about the same in an interview and said,

I have always been into sports and I have played nationals in Judo while I was in college. I started off with basketball and then played state-level basketball, shot-put throw and disc throw AND later on softball! That’s how, while I was in second year of my graduation, got the opportunity to audition for a film for Yashraj with Shah Rukh Khan.”

Relationships/Affairs

Tanya Abrol dated Aashish Verma for two years. The two made acquaintance at a party. Consequently, their mutual friends suggested that they should date each other. Although they did not consider the suggestion at first, soon they became good friends. Ashish confessed his feelings when Tanya told him that somebody had asked her out on a date. While recalling the same in an interview she said,

When I told him that I had agreed to go on a date, he didn’t say anything, as he is an introvert. That’s when I asked him if he felt bad about me going on a date. At that point, though there was a bit of healthy flirting between us, I didn’t exactly know where we stood. He said, ‘Maybe, you shouldn’t go on any date. I think we should date.’ I replied, ‘Thank you, what a proposal. Every girl dreams of such a proposal.”

Career

Film

Tanya Abrol made her debut with the Bollywood sports drama film Chak De! India in which she played the role of Balbir Kaur. The film revolves around a former hockey player Kabir Khan whose image is tainted as a result of religious prejudice when India loses a hockey match against Pakistan. As the story unfolds, Kabir Khan trains the Indian women’s national hockey team which emerges victorious in the world cup, proving his loyalty to the nation.

The film earned her a Screen Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, shared with other actresses cast as Indian women’s national hockey team members.  She played the role of Avneet in the multilingual film Miley Naa Miley Hum (2011). In 2013, she ventured into the Punjabi film industry with the film Love Yoou Soniye.

In 2016, she appeared in the Punjabi film Aatishbaazi Ishq. After playing the role of PSI Peetal Devi in Hindi horror thriller film Durgamati: The Myth (2020), Tanya appeared in Hindi romantic comedy Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (2021) as Preet Munjal, sharing the screen with Ayushmann Khurrana.

Television

She first appeared on television when she hosted a show titled Star Sabse Favourite Kon. Thereafter, the makers of Star Sabse Favourite Kon offered her a role in the TV show Palampur Express. In 2009, Tanya made her television debut with the show Palampur Express (2009) in which she Paramjeet Kaur. The show aired on Sony channel.

In 2014, she starred in the romance anthology series Yeh Hai Aashiqui in which she played the role of a Punjabi girl Santosh. The show aired on the channel UTV Bindass. In the episode, Santosh falls in love with a Sikkimese boy named Jigme (played by Meiyang Chang).

From 2011 to 2016, she played the supporting role of Pam in the Indian sitcom Best of Luck Nikki on Disney Channel.

Between 2014 and 2016, she appeared as Inspector Jaywanti Shinde in various episodes of the TV show C.I.D. She has appeared in various TV shows including Kuch Toh Log Kahengey (2011), Oye Bunty Babloo Oye (2011), Savdhaan India (2012), Maddam Sir (2021), and Mauka-E-Vardaat (2021).

Theater

From 2010 to 2014, Abrol played the role of an inspector in the theatrical production Get Rid of My Wife, written and directed by Paritosh Painter. In the play, she shared the stage with various well-known actors like Smita Bansal and Nasir Khan.

Facts/Trivia

  • In an interview, while calling herself an “accidental actor,” she revealed that she went to audition for Chak De! India just to get a day out of her hostel. However, she later realised that it was mandatory to audition. She said,

    Our head of sports department told us all the sports girls must audition because its a sports film. I was in Girls hostel and it was very strict . I just went for fun to audition at Tagore theatre in Chandigarh, so that we all will get to hang ‘OUT’ of the hostel ! Little did I know that I would be short listed and will be called to the tinsel town.”

  • In 2018, she was a part of the Lucknow Nawabs team which emerged as the winner of the Box Cricket League (BCL). BCL is an Indian sports reality TV show which aired on MTV India. In the finals, Lucknow Nawabs defeated the two-time champions Delhi Dragons and Abrol won the title of Girl of the Match.
