The Paper Moon actors have almost died too many times to count. “I almost died,” he confessed. His eldest son Kevin McEnroe, 37, believes this is the call he and his siblings dread. “That’s the phone call we’ve been waiting for.”

The actress has been prescribed pain medication for her back and neck pain as well as rheumatoid arthritis. In May 2020, he overdosed on painkillers, opiates and morphine.

Kevin admits, “At times, it was touch and go. I had to call my brother and sister and tell them he was considered blind, deaf, and might never speak again.” When he woke up from the coma, “He didn’t know where he was; he couldn’t say, ‘I’m scared,'” Kevin recalled.

To make matters worse, his family was unable to see him in person due to the COVID restrictions. They could only communicate through video calls and phone calls when they were finally able to go and see their mother, “Emily first visited her, she had to stand behind glass,” Kevin said.

Thankfully, O’Neal is on the road to recovery and focused on sobriety. It was a struggle, but he attended Twelve Step meetings and attended therapy. “Emotionally, the things that made my mother want to take drugs in the first place are still there,” admits Kevin.

“I’ve been trying to get sober all my life. Every day, I try,” O’Neal admitted.
