Oscar-winning actor Tatum O’Neal suffered some dramatic medical complications after a relapse and overdose.

The Paper Moon actors have almost died too many times to count. “I almost died,” he confessed. His eldest son Kevin McEnroe, 37, believes this is the call he and his siblings dread. “That’s the phone call we’ve been waiting for.”
McEnroe, whose father is tennis legend John McEnroe, continued. “He also had a heart attack and several seizures. There was a time when we didn’t think he would survive,” the mother and son shared the details PEOPLE magazine.
The stroke left O’Neal in a coma that lasted six weeks, and although he appears to be on the mend, Kevin and his siblings Sean, 35, and Emily, 32, still have huge fears for his quality of life. They wonder if he will ever walk or talk again.

The struggle was so real that the family kept the devastating news a secret for three years. Yes, this overdose happened in 2020, and for the past three years, O’Neal has been in numerous rehabilitation facilities trying to regain his strength, memory and ability to read and write.
He has made better progress than most people in that position. “I’ve been through a lot,” she admits, but is finally willing to share her story, hoping it will help others dealing with sobriety.
O’Neal’s story of addiction is an all too common story in today’s society. He was addicted to prescription pills during the outbreak.

The actress has been prescribed pain medication for her back and neck pain as well as rheumatoid arthritis. In May 2020, he overdosed on painkillers, opiates and morphine.
Luckily, LA friends at his apartment found him, and he was rushed to the hospital. Since the incident, he has focused on his recovery. “She’s become very isolated,” Kevin said proving it’s been a tough few years for the actress.
“With the addition of morphine and heavier pharmaceuticals, it becomes scary. COVID, chronic pain, all these things lead to places of isolation. In that place, I don’t think there is much hope for him.”
While recovering, things took a turn for the worse for the actor; he was diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that affects the language part of the brain. In addition to the coma, he “suffered damage to his right frontal cortex.”

Kevin admits, “At times, it was touch and go. I had to call my brother and sister and tell them he was considered blind, deaf, and might never speak again.” When he woke up from the coma, “He didn’t know where he was; he couldn’t say, ‘I’m scared,'” Kevin recalled.
To make matters worse, his family was unable to see him in person due to the COVID restrictions. They could only communicate through video calls and phone calls when they were finally able to go and see their mother, “Emily first visited her, she had to stand behind glass,” Kevin said.
Thankfully, O’Neal is on the road to recovery and focused on sobriety. It was a struggle, but he attended Twelve Step meetings and attended therapy. “Emotionally, the things that made my mother want to take drugs in the first place are still there,” admits Kevin.
“I’ve been trying to get sober all my life. Every day, I try,” O’Neal admitted.
