Taylor Swift Opens Up About Her ‘Nightmare’ Audition For ‘Les Misérables’

Singer Taylor Swift has reflected on her experience auditioning for “Les Miserables.” The 2012 period drama, an adaptation of the play of the same name, stars several talented actors in the lead roles, including one of Swift’s favorites, Eddie Redmayne.

The Grammy award winner was assigned to screen test with the actor during the film’s early production stages. However, the experience took a toll on Swift as the character she was auditioning for was made to look unappealing, and she thought it would be awkward to meet Redmayne in that situation. Swift also revealed that she knew she wouldn’t be chosen for any of the roles.

During her appearance on Friday’s episode of “The Graham Norton Show,” Swift recounted when she auditioned for a part in Tom Hooper’s period musical “Les Misérables.”

The Grammy Award-winning musician was just one of many talented stars who tried out for the role in the film, which eventually consisted of Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks, and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Swift detailed that she tried out for the role of Cosette, which was eventually portrayed by Seyfried and Eponine, played by Barks. But the actor shared that landing any part was impossible.

He said on the show, per Page Six, “I’ve got the look of Cosette and the range, vocally, of Eponine, so I’m definitely in there for a good while but not for long – I’m not going to get the role.”

Joining Swift on the show is Redmayne, who starred in “Les Misérables” as Marius Pontmercy, a revolutionary student. At the time, the pair were tasked with doing a screen test together, which Swift raved about because she admired the actor.

Swift recounted, “I thought, ‘This is not an experience I’ll ever have again in my life,’ so I said yes.”

However, things didn’t turn out the way she expected, as the “Afterglow” rider was told to screen test while fully dressed and made up as Eponine. According to the script, Eponine was written with rotting brown teeth and other unfeminine looks, making Swift afraid to meet Redmayne while dressed as the character.

He said, “‘ I was like, ‘You’re going to do it after I meet Eddie Redmayne, right?’… But no, they made me look like I was dying, and it immediately became a nightmare for me.”.

Taylor Swift Avoids Talking To Eddie Redmayne

Embarrassed by how she found the part, Swift said she refused to speak to Redmayne at first when he arrived on set for a screen test.

However, he wasn’t the only one having a bad day. The “Fantastic Beasts” actor also didn’t feel comfortable trying out for the part with Swift because he had bad breath that day.

He said, “My overwhelming memory of it is that I just went to Pizza Express first and had the garlic dough balls first … and all I could think about was my garlic breath.”

Swift replied, “You’re crying, and I think it’s because of my looks,” before admitting that it’s nice to know that they “were both struggling at the time.”
