Teachers On TikTok Share Their Thoughts On Meghan Trainor’s Apology

TikTok teachers did not accept Meghan Trainor’s apology.

The “All About That Bass” singer recently made the comment, “Guru F” during an episode of the “Workin’ On It” podcast while chatting with Trisha Paytas. And even though it’s a pre-recorded podcast, which means there’s time to reconsider putting the conversation out to the public, it’s still live and teachers across the country have something to say.

After Trainor issued an apology with some context as to why she said what she said, many teachers took to TikTok to express their feelings and say that they did not accept her apology.

Trainor created an apology video on TikTok that in less than a day has received nearly 2 million views and 18,000 comments.

“Teachers of TikTok and teachers of the world, I recently said, ‘Teacher F’ on a podcast, and it’s not how I feel,” he began his apology video. “I’m upset because we’re talking about how sending your child to school here in America is horrible, and what we all have to go through, especially the teachers is not normal and not good.”

He went on to explain the background to his insensitive comments. “So, at that time, I got angry and said, ‘Teacher F. F a certain human in the old days.’ But I don’t mean that to all teachers,” he continued. “I love you teacher. I fight for teachers. I think they have the hardest jobs, and they are the lowest paid. They are the most underappreciated, and they raise us all.”

Many followers, especially teachers, took to the comment section to leave their thoughts. Much of the comment section was filled with people explaining why what he said was not appreciated and that an apology wasn’t enough.

“Unfortunately, this is the perspective that our students are taught to take home. We are seeing behavior that is unlike anything we have seen before,” wrote one teacher.

Another added, “As a kindergarten teacher who already feels unappreciated, it hurts to hear your words. We are literally risking our lives for our children.”

One teacher commented on how hard teachers work, “This is very annoying to hear as a teacher. We work thankless, put our own money into our classrooms, and work long hours without pay.”

Trainor’s apology came a little too late for many who shared their thoughts on the harsh discussion about teachers on the podcast.

A teacher named Jen, who uses Strategic Classroom on TikTok, shared her personal experience of the tasks teachers are expected to do in a video directed at Trainor.

“The last drill I participated in as a teacher, I didn’t have my room key, and I couldn’t lock my door,” she began her story.

“I’ve been asking for a key for weeks because I know if something happens, I’ll need it to keep myself and my students safe.”

He went on to explain that he was told “they were working on it,” but the drill was happening, and he didn’t have the key.

“I did what I would do if the situation was real, which is I closed the door and I stood in front of it while my student was pushed against the wall,” he said. “An administrator came and opened the door and of course I jumped. I explained my situation that I didn’t have a key and I had asked for one and he moved along.”

The next day when Jen saw the administrator in the hallway, she was told that the situation told her everything she needed to know about herself as a teacher. “That if I was in that situation, I would protect the children,” he said. “And I sat there and thought about my 4-month-old baby at home and I realized that the expectation is for teachers to sacrifice themselves.”

He then gave Trainor a direct message. “Your explanation of why you said what you said makes no sense,” he continued. “Because if anyone understands how terrifying it is to think about sending your child to school with a special backpack, it’s a teacher.”

Jen is just one of MANY teachers who created videos explaining how they felt about Trainor’s podcast and her apology.

A video created by a music teacher shared the frustration he felt with the caption, “I know our support is not important to him, but we have the right to be disappointed.”

Another video talks about a book Trainor is writing that will be released this week. Jason Lewis, who runs disasterphefilms on TikTok, posed the question of how people would read his book without a teacher teaching them to read.

“Thank you!! As a teacher, it hurts more than usual to hear that from him. I’m a big fan,” one follower wrote in the comments section.

“Don’t forget that the only reason he can participate in writing a book is because of the teacher who taught him ?‍?,” added another.
