‘Terrified’ family of woman killed by prison escapee Danelo Cavalcante under 24-hour security

The family of a woman who “feared” she was stabbed to death by an “extremely dangerous” inmate who escaped from a Pennsylvania prison last week are locked in their home under round-the-clock police protection.

Deborah Brandão’s loved ones fear for their safety because her killer and ex-boyfriend, Danelo Cavalcante, remains on the run more than a week after he broke out of the Chester County jail by scaling a wall.

A week before his attempted escape, Cavalcante was sentenced to life in prison for killing the 33-year-old mother — who he stabbed 38 times in front of her daughter and son, then just 7 and 3, in April 2021.

He is also wanted in Brazil for a 2017 murder in that country, according to the Chester County district attorney.

Brandão had threatened to hand him over to the authorities when he found out about the crime – which detectives say was his motive for the gruesome murder.

District Attorney Deb Ryan addressed the family’s concerns during a news conference Thursday where investigators announced that the fugitive may have been seen near Longwood Gardens, a botanical garden in the area, before noon.

“They have protection, and they are scared. They didn’t leave their homes,” Ryan told reporters. “They were barricaded inside and very concerned about their safety. We have a police detail around them 24 hours a day, but I know they are very, very worried.”

Brandão’s sister, who has taken custody of both of her children, told CNN she could not sleep while Cavalcante was free.

“I haven’t slept in many days. Since [his escape] I have woken up in fear at night. I sleep and wake up scared,” Sarah Brandão told the station in an interview translated from Portuguese to English.

She said her sister and Cavalcante were neighbors who became friendly and then dated for about a year and a half.

At first, he was good with her and her children but as their relationship grew closer, he became more jealous and controlling, Sarah, her sister shared.

“He kept saying that he was very jealous – when he drank, he became a different person; that he kept going through his mobile phone,” he told the news station.

Deborah eventually took out a protection from abuse order against him after he repeatedly threatened her. He killed her about a year later.

Sarah is worried that Cavalcante could show up at her house because he is avoiding the authorities.
