Texas man confesses to beating teen with a hammer, stabbing her to death in ‘fit of rage’

A Texas man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly admitted to beating a high school student with a hammer, strangling her and then stabbing her to death when he realized she was alive in a “furious” state.

Jamaurea Jermaine Britton, 19, was charged with murder after officers found the body of 18-year-old Dejah Hood in a creek bed behind her apartment building in Tyler, the Tyler Morning Telegraph reported.

Hood, a student at John Tyler High School, was reported missing by family members at 12:40 a.m. Tuesday after he went out with friends — including Britton — Monday afternoon and did not return home or respond to calls and texts, according to the outlet.

Officers who arrived at Britton’s apartment to question her about 1 a.m. Tuesday found blood in her apartment and found her body wrapped in trash bags, tape and sheets behind the Hollytree Apartment complex, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by local newspapers.

The suspect eventually confessed to killing the teenager and disposing of her body and gave police a detailed account of his gruesome actions.

She said she picked up Hood and a 1-year-old baby she was babysitting from her apartment Monday night so she could help him pack for the move.

Once back at his place, Britton said he was alone in the kitchen and started thinking about his recent breakup with his ex-girlfriend who was now getting “angrier and angrier,” according to the affidavit.

She said Hood approached her and “playfully pulled her ears,” which is something her ex often did.

The action sent Britton into what he described as a “frenzy” and he told police he grabbed a glass bottle that he used to hit Hood in the back of the head, causing him to fall to the ground, the document said.

He then allegedly punched and choked her, she told officers, before using a hammer to repeatedly hit her in the head until the wooden handle broke, according to the affidavit.

Britton then tried to kill himself with a knife but failed and then held a gun – which he had bought earlier that day – to his head when a neighbor knocked on the door, according to his statement to police.

Britton covered up and opened the door. The person had heard the commotion and was checking to see if he was OK, the document states.

After reassuring the person that he was fine, the alleged killer remembered the 1-year-old watching a movie in his bed and decided to take the child to the victim’s mother’s house, he told police.

When he returned home, he told police he heard Hood calling his name, according to the affidavit.

He allegedly stabbed her several times after he realized she was still alive, the document said.

Britton then wrapped and taped her body and took it out of his apartment around 3 a.m. and threw it over an “invisible” fence and returned around 7 a.m. to cover the body with leaves, police said in the affidavit.

Britton was arrested and charged with murder and threats of violence against a family/household.

He is being held on $1.05 million bond in the Smith County Jail, according to the Tyler Morning Telegraph.
