Texas mom Alicia Calderon tortured woman by locking her in dog cage, pouring boiling water on her: prosecutors

A Texas mother has been ordered to serve 75 years in prison after she tortured a woman for months by locking her in a dog crate, starving her and dousing her in boiling water.

Alicia Calderon, 37, was sentenced Tuesday for the “sadistic torture” of the 24-year-old after he tricked the young woman into living with him in a trailer in Wylie, north of Dallas, prosecutors said.

“Calderon tricked the victim into living with him and then controlled her with unimaginable torture,” Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said after his sentencing.

“He badly burned the victim’s arms, chest, and back by pouring a pot of boiling water on him. He also forbade him to eat, locked him in a dog crate, and cut off his communication with the outside world.”

The abuse began in 2019 when the victim, identified by FOX4 as Simone Valdez-Junkin, moved into her abuser’s family trailer to help care for Calderon’s children and a disabled elderly woman in exchange for free rent, prosecutors said.

After several months, Calderon began taking the victim’s phone, restricting her food and finally locking her in a room with the elderly woman.

The torture escalated when the victim, who had lost more than half her body weight by then, was caught stealing some of Calderon’s food in July 2021, prosecutors said.

Calderon locked the victim in a dog crate and poured boiling water over his legs as punishment. Then, several months later, the abuser doused the victim’s arms, chest and back with boiling water again.

The young woman suffered severe burns, for which Calderon refused to allow her to receive treatment, according to prosecutors.

The victim’s family alerted the authorities in February last year after the young woman managed to gain access to the phone and sent a Facebook message to her stepfather asking for help.

When authorities responded to the trailer, they found the malnourished victim weighing only 68 pounds. He also suffered second- and third-degree burns and his head was shaved, prosecutors said.

“It took me about a week and a half before I could really register that it was my son,” the victim’s mother, Farrah Junkin, told FOX4. “He’s just skin. Literally the skin hangs from his bones.”

The young woman, who underwent several surgeries and skin grafts, spent six weeks recovering in hospital following her rescue.

Meanwhile, the elderly relative’s condition deteriorated so badly that responding officers initially thought he had died.

During Calderon’s sentencing, prosecutors said the abuser had stolen nearly $78,000 from the disabled woman through her Social Security and inheritance checks.

Calderon blew the stolen money on tattoo shops, party rentals and new tire rims, prosecutors said.

The relationship between Calderon and the old woman is unclear. The condition of the elderly victim is also unknown.

Calderon was sentenced after a jury found him guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury to a household member.

Prosecutors allege her husband, Joseph Calderon, was also involved and have since charged her with exploitation and abuse of the elderly.

He is out on bond pending trial.
