Teyana Taylor set the record straight after details of her divorce from Iman Shumpert made headlines.
While information about her previously secret divorce filing continues to surface, the singer-songwriter and actress has taken to her social media platforms to confirm her dedication to keeping the matter a secret.
She informed her many followers and fans that she is focused on “protecting” her family, especially her children, as she and her estranged husband think about their future.
Teyana Taylor Refuses To Let Her Children Suffer Amid Public Scrutiny Over Her Divorce
Taylor’s divorce journey took an unexpected turn when the intimate details of her breakup with Shumpert emerged publicly this week. Despite filing for divorce in January, private court documents were leaked, leaving the “My Super Sweet 16” star feeling vulnerable.
For that, he decided to take the decision himself, explaining through social media that the statements in the media were not directly from him but were extracted from leaked documents. The “Google Me” hitmaker’s rant reads in part:
“I think it’s my business, don’t bother anyone & you all know I never play about our children, family & privacy. I do not talk about this personal matter to any media or blog etc. So everyone claiming “Teyana Said” didn’t get any direct statement from ME. This statement is taken from a private court document that was leaked to the public.”

While expressing her dismay at the situation, she noted that it was “very heartbreaking” for someone to expose such private matters to the public eye. Even so, her children seem to be her main concern as she writes:
“Protecting my family is something I have ALWAYS done & for my children, I will continue to do so. Please, if you all like you playing Junie & Rue’s nieces as much as you all show, please give me & my family some privacy to resolve this amicably.”
Taylor initially surprised her 17.3 million followers in September when she posted a sweet photo of her and Shumpert in matching outfits on Instagram, along with a caption that read:
“Not too much on my best friend! To be honest, Iman and I have separated and have been separated for a long time. To be 1000% clear, ‘infidelity’ is not a reason for our departure. We are still great friends and great business partners, and we are a great team when it comes to co-parenting our two beautiful children. Most importantly, we are FAMILY & in ten years together, seven years married, we have never played with or about THAT.”
The “Madea’s Big Happy Family” star explained why she kept the news of their breakup a secret, saying it was no one’s business. As far as he’s concerned, the decision allows him and the NBA star to navigate this period of their lives on their own terms.
Lovebirds Keep It Sweet Until Their Marriage Troubles Become Public
Although Taylor and Shumpert first met in 2011, their relationship remained platonic as the “Stomp the Yard: Homecoming” actor was seeing other people at the time.
They maintained their platonic friendship until it blossomed into something more in 2013, making their social media debut as a couple on Shumpert’s 24th birthday on June 25, 2014.

While the mother of two shared a photo of them kissing on the beach with the caption, “Happy Birthday love.. #ILoveU,” her now ex posted the video on his Instagram page.
Later that same year, the two made their red carpet debut at the 2014 BET Hip Hop Awards at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center in Atlanta, according to PEOPLE.
By September 2015, the former professional basketball player and his then-girlfriend announced that they were ready for a family with the arrival of their first child together.
Months after announcing their pregnancy, Shumpert and Taylor revealed they were engaged at their baby shower at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland.
However, it was only in a 2016 interview that Taylor, who had already welcomed their daughter in December 2015, revealed that she and Shumpert had exchanged vows in person.
A few months later, she shared a photo from the wedding, showing them in matching red leather jackets with the words “I DO” and “I DO TOO” emblazoned on the back.
Their daughter, Junie, also wore a jacket with the words, “OH!… ME TOO.” The “Teyana and Iman” stars became parents for the second time when they welcomed another baby girl, Rue Rose, in September 2020.
The reality television stars were married for six years before their relationship culminated in 2023.
