“The Bachelor’s” Clayton Echard and Susie Evans shocked Bachelor Nation with the news of their split late last month.
The two, who started dating after Echard’s whirlwind season of “The Bachelor” ended, had begun a new phase of their relationship shortly before deciding to call it quits.
Evans and Echard have always been open to discussing their relationship openly, including the possible, not the best, aspects.
The couple’s decision to continue their long-distance relationship in August was no exception.
The joint choice was fueled by their shared desire to “pursue our dreams,” as Echard shared in August in an interview with Us Weekly’s “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast.
What led to the couple’s decision to keep calling it quits?
Evans and Echard initially felt optimistic about their decision to try a long-distance relationship. The Blast explores the couple’s thought process, which Echard also touched on in his aforementioned podcast interview.
Echard shared that he and Evans are committed to the idea of living in the present moment and resolve not to allow themselves to get lost in a cycle of negative thinking.
“We were like, ‘we don’t know if it’s going to be a relationship a month from now, or if it’s going to be a lifetime, but like, no pressure. Let’s just love each other and be grateful.'”
Echard also shared that he and his ex are now working together to come up with practical insights surrounding the real possibility that their long-distance relationship can’t inspire the couple, and what they can do to fix things.
“Distance makes the heart grow fonder,” Echard said in the interview. “He has his own dreams and aspirations. And we’ll try it… if it doesn’t work and we’re like, ‘we don’t like this distance, it’s hurting us,’ then one of us will move on to someone else.” (per Us Weekly)
A month after their decision to try a long-distance relationship, the ‘Bachelor’ couple announced their decision to separate, via an Instagram post.
Echard and Evans were embarrassed to publicly reveal the reason for their separation. However, they are very transparent with The Bachelor Nation and their fans in sharing their relationship is not the easiest.
“We know no healthy relationship comes without its struggles,” the couple wrote in an Instagram post, which they both shared on their respective accounts. “But we’ve come to realize that we’re not prepared for outside forces that hinder our ability to not only heal as individuals but also as a couple.”
Echard Realized He Couldn’t Be The Best Partner He Knew He Could Be To Evans
The former couple trusted Bachelor Nation favorite Kaitlyn Bristowe to lead a joint interview in which they revealed more details about their split.
Bristowe’s “Off The Vine” podcast has been a longtime destination for Bachelor Nation favorites to share their post-show experiences with the show’s ever-curious fans. Echard and Evans appear on today’s episode of the podcast, titled “The One About The Breakup.”
Echard candidly discussed several aspects of related insecurities after the show that all contributed to the couple’s decision to split.
“There are all these unknowns,” Echard told Bristowe in their Us Weekly conversation. “And I think it puts me in an unstable place. Also, with all the backlash from the show, it got overwhelming very quickly. So, what I think what ended up happening was I was trying to figure out my next move [and] I started questioning who I was because of all the negativity. I started to believe some of the things that were said about me. And now I look back, and realize like, I couldn’t be the stable, secure guy that I needed to be to really give it my all in a relationship.”
Evans revealed he was aware of his ex-partner’s struggles with instability and admitted he couldn’t “give it too” because he was “not sure”.
“I was like, you know, ‘I can’t wait three months,'” Evans said, referring to Echard’s need for more healing time from the public scrutiny he received after “The Bachelor” season wrapped. “I can’t promise three months or anything alone. And I think that’s really hard in a relationship too when I’m otherwise like, ‘I need security… I want to be two whole people,'” Evans concludes weakly.
Echard also revealed how she and Evans have navigated life after their split.
He shared, “damage [from their split] still too fresh” to consider the possibility of reuniting with Evans.
