King was upset by the reaction, and it hurt even more for him because he’s been a fan of the film since the 1989 animated film. He knew the original concept for the larger-than-life character Ursula, played by Melissa McCarthy in the new film, was modeled after the drag legend. Divine.

She still doesn’t think that should be a requirement for getting a job as a makeup artist on a live-action movie set. McCarthy also shared while promoting the film that she is a fan of drag shows and of course takes inspiration from drag queens.

“I’ve been going to shows because I shouldn’t have been going to shows,” he admitted to Entertainment Weekly. “There is a drag queen living inside of me. I was always on the verge of going full time with him.”

The backlash came in mid-May after a glimpse of Melissa McCarthy’s version of Ursula was dropped. Some fans understand that the look isn’t quite glam yet, and we’ve basically had a taste of what’s to come with basic makeup.

“People don’t understand this is makeup for CGI; this is not the final product. It must be easy for the animators to play with it with lighting and color saturation,” explained one fan.

This wasn’t enough to stop fans from agreeing that the appearance was unexpected. Now that the movie is out, people are focusing again on the fact that Ariel, the red-headed mermaid, is played by a person of color.
