The Pretenders are back!
Nearly 40 years after the band’s seminal LP “Learning To Crawl” was released, Chrissie Hynde and her friends are back with a new album and have shared their first single.
The new record will be the group’s first in nearly three years. “Hate For Sale” was released in Summer 2020.
Lead singer Chrissie Hynde seems to be in a reflective mood this year. Hynde, 71, recently spoke out against the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, sharing his feelings about the institution following Courtney Love’s own remarks against it. Hynde also documented a visit to the final resting place of original Pretenders guitarist James Honeyman Scott in Hereford, England.
Hynde Describes Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame As ‘More Of A Backslapping Establishment’
MEGA
The “Brass In Pocket” singer took to Facebook in April to speak out against the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; the class of 2023 was announced a month later.
Hynde, who was a member of the Hall of Fame class of 2005 with the Pretenders, wrote, “If anyone wants my place in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall Of Fame they are welcome. I don’t want to be associated with it. It’s just more establishment backslapping. I’m in a group so I don’t have to be a part of all that. I was living a happy life in Rio when I got the call that I was inducted,” said Hynde. “My heart is broken because I know I have to go back to do it because it will hurt my parents too much if I don’t do it. I had already given them enough trouble back then, so it was one of those things that would save me years of frustrating them. (like moving out of the United States and getting arrested at a PETA protest and my general personality),” he said.
“Apart from Neil Young’s participation in the induction process, the whole thing was, and still is, absolutely rubbish. It has absolutely nothing to do with rock and roll and anyone who thinks so is an idiot, XCH,” the post concluded. (per Billboard)
Hynde Pays Tribute To Original Pretend Guitarist James Honeyman Scott
Hynde documented her trip to Hereford, England, on Instagram in April.
He wrote letters to his followers, sharing details of his journey. Describing Honeyman Scott’s tombstone, he wrote, “I’m attaching a picture of Jimmy’s tombstone. It makes me very happy to see that guitarists have visited him recently and left their plectrums/picks with him.”
Honeyman Scott was part of the original Pretenders lineup and was featured on their first two LPs “Pretenders” and “Pretenders II.” He died of a drug overdose in 1982.
The Pretenders Announce New Album And Single!
The group shared news about their upcoming album “Relentless” on their official Instagram account, sharing photos and a reel featuring a clip of the single “Let The Sun Come In.”
“The pretenders are excited to announce their new album “Relentless!” The note read. “Out September 1, 2023,” he revealed.
Hynde spoke to NME about the new record.
He said, “I like the definition: ‘shows no reduction in intensity,'” explains Hynde. “It’s the life of an artist. You never retire. You become relentless.”
Hynde also explained the creative process with current Pretenders guitarist James Walbourne.
“We’ve developed this method of working remotely and it looks like we’re continuing to do so for this album. This is something that we have honed to an art in recent years,” explained Hynde. “[Walbourne] always come up with something I wouldn’t have thought of on my own and I love surprises,” Hynde said.
The album will have 12 songs and will be released on September 1.
