The trio has made a habit of paying tribute to their late friend lately, and now they’re taking the time to honor Watts on what would have been his 82nd birthday. Watts, who had been The Rolling Stones’ drummer since 1962, died in August 2021.
Watts died while the Stones were on their Uncensored Tour. Watts’ illness forced him to take a back seat from the tour; Watts’ last tour with the band was in 2016.
The band’s old friend, Steve Jordan, sat behind the kit during the tour. Jordan is also the drummer for Keith Richards’ solo project, The X-Pensive Winos.

“Charlie had a completely successful procedure,” the announcement began (via The Blast, per Page Six). “However, I found out that his doctor concluded that he needs proper rest and recovery this week. With training starting in a few weeks, it’s very disappointing, to say the least, but it’s also fair to say no one saw this coming.
A spokesperson for The Rolling Stones announced Watts’ death after his death on August 24.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Charlie Watts. He died peacefully in a London hospital surrounded by his family,” the statement began. “Charlie was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather and member of the Rolling Stones, one of the greatest drummers of his generation. We ask that the privacy of his family, band members and close friends be respected now.”
His wife, Shirley, died the following December. The couple has been married since 1964.

Jagger completed the tribute. The Rolling Stones singer posted a black and white photo from the band’s Still Life tour circa 1981.
Jagger, 79, wrote, “Happy birthday, dear Charlie. Love Mick” captioned the photo.
Richards spoke about Watts’ sense of humor in an interview with Rolling Stone after his beloved friend’s passing. He described Watts as having “…an incredible sense of humor. And my joy is that I love to crack him. If you can get to that place, he won’t stop, and it’s the funniest thing in the world. He has a sense incredible humor that he keeps to himself unless you trigger it. And then it can be painful to laugh at,” the “Take It So Hard” singer said. (per The Blast)
