‘The View’ Hosts Call Out Taylor Swift’s Critics Over ‘Fatphobic’ Backlash: ‘Beyond ‘Fat”

“The View” hosts have voiced their support for Taylor Swift after offended people online criticized parts of her “Anti-Hero” music video as “fatphobic.”

The video, which debuted on October 21, features visuals that show the singer reflecting on some of the experiences he’s faced in the past. However, one scene which seemed to depict her previous battle with an eating disorder has been called insensitive by online trolls.

In the latest episode of “The View,” the show’s host argued that the naysayers were misinterpreting the context of the music video and talked about how Swift often weaves a personal narrative into her music.

Swift recently came under fire from some online for allegedly using a “fatphobic” narrative in her music video for “Anti-Hero.” One scene shows the Grammy-winning musician stepping on a scale to check his weight. The scale displays “fat” instead of his actual weight as a critical doppelganger of himself looks disapprovingly from his side.

Since the music video went viral, many have accused Swift of fat-shaming women of her size or larger and have criticized her for being insensitive to the plight of women who still struggle with weight issues.

However, on Tuesday’s episode of “The View,” the ladies of the show gave Swift their full support, saying that critics and other trolls had misinterpreted the music video’s storyline while suggesting that Swift was referencing her previous battle with an eating disorder.

“He’s just describing a personal experience,” co-host Sunny Hostin said. “And frankly, it’s a personal experience that many women have.” “And men,” another woman chimed in, claiming it could happen to both sexes.

‘It’s More Than ‘Fat’

Adding to the conversation, co-host Sara Haines insisted that Swift’s intentions with the music video were clear, subtly dismissing online trolls for choosing to twist her point.

“Everybody knows what he means,” he said. “It goes beyond ‘fat’, it’s, ‘you’re not good enough, you’ve become bad.’ If you were better or stronger, this number would be different. It says a lot in one word.”

Meanwhile, Whoopi Goldberg urged those who still feel uncomfortable with the song to skip it.

The EGOT winner commented, “Let him have his feelings. If you don’t like the song, don’t listen to it. Why are you wasting your time?” Goldberg continued, “Leave the girl alone! You know, y’all want to say something about Taylor Swift. Leave her alone, OK?”

“What should he put on this scale, ‘fat?’ That doesn’t work,” tweeted co-host Joy Behar.

The conversation then turned to how Swift has always been open to sharing details of her life in her music videos, a long-term move her fans have known since her first days in the music industry.

“Part of what makes Taylor Swift so unique is that she shares so much about herself with her audience,” co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin said. “He talks about his breakups, he talks about his relationships and his different struggles. So on the one hand, we can’t expect him to put himself out there and give it to us, the listeners, and then react and say, ‘Oh, he shouldn’t tell us about this struggle he’s going through.’”
