Sam Levinson, who directed the show, has also recently come under fire for allegedly elevating its nudity and violence content to exploitative levels.

A spicy piece by Rolling stone written after they interviewed several crew members revealed that some were unhappy with the creative direction.

“It’s like any rape fantasy any toxic man would have on the show — and then the woman comes back for more because it makes her music better,” the publication said..

Another interviewee said, “It’s like, ‘What is this? What am I reading here?’ It’s like sexual torture porn.”

However, after the piece was released, Depp defended Levinson, calling him “the best director” he had ever worked with.

He said, “I have never felt more supported or respected in a creative space, my input and opinion is more valued. Working with Sam is a true collaboration in every way.”

Depp also came out to defend his character’s “absence” amid backlash from fans and critics.

In a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, he claimed that Jocelyn’s excessive passion was a fundamental aspect of her character as “a born and bred entertainer.”

The actress said of Jocelyn, “‘The way she dresses, for example, is that she’s trying to tell you something all the time … or express her feelings in some kind of way.’

He added, “I also think that the stupidity of the character physically reflects the stupidity that we can see emotionally in him.”

Although “The Idol” was criticized since its release, it received a five-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. Per Daily Mail, it also received the most views for its first episode in a single week, far more than HBO’s “The White Lotus” or “Euphoria” received during the same time period.
