‘Wham!’ Will See Friendship Michael And Ridgeley

Ridgeley, 60, and his bandmates were besties early on and remained so through their growing success in the mid-Eighties.

According to the archive footage used in the trailer of the interview with Michael, the two were not yet teenagers. Michael said they met when the “Last Christmas” singer was 11 and her bandmate was a year older. The Voiceover of Ridgeley reveals “one thing [he] ever wanted to be in a band with George.” (per Collider) The feeling is very mutual; Michael, who died in 2016, was heard saying “Andrew changed my life in exactly the way someone needed to change my life if I was going to be a pop star.”

Ridgeley also acknowledged the importance of Wham’s success to Michael’s personal life; Michael came out as gay in the late nineties in a live CNN interview and later became a passionate advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, but in the mid-eighties, he did not come out publicly.

Audio of Michael talking about being “uncomfortable” as a closeted gay man during the height of Wham’s success, can also be heard in the trailer. He also explained how the group’s success was a major factor by which he measured his personal success.

Ridgeley Gives Documentary Director His Personal Seal of Approval

Surviving Wham members are “delighted” by the portrayal of the band’s career. Ridgeley gave his seal of approval to the documentary’s director, Chris Smith, who also directed “FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened.”

The singer told Rolling Stone, “He’s come as close as anyone to bringing to life what Wham! is all about and has done it with honesty and love.”

Ridgeley wrote in the caption of his Instagram post on the documentary, “I’m happy to bring you the news that WHAM!, the documentary film, is coming to Netflix on July 5, 2023. It’s a genuine WHAM account!’ s meteoric rise to success and how WHAM! came to find a special place in the hearts of many,” he continued. “It’s a joy to look back on such a wonderful chapter in the lives of young AJR & GM and I hope for many of you, it will also relive the golden era and carefree joy of youth,” Ridgeley concluded.
