Ticketmaster Finds Unlikely Allies Amid Taylor Swift Concert Drama

Several bands and artists have come forward to defend Ticketmaster amid the Taylor Swift concert drama.

In a statement posted on his Instagram Stories, the “Bad Blood” singer admitted “There are a lot of reasons why people are having a hard time getting tickets and I’m trying to figure out how this can be fixed moving forward. I’m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them, many times if they can handle this kind of request and we are sure they can.”

In addition to the difficulty of getting tickets, many people complain about ticket prices due to Ticketmaster’s dynamic pricing tool and inflated ticket costs from third-party ticketing sites. While many fans are unhappy with the situation, M. Shadows, frontman of Avenged Sevenfold, took to Twitter to defend the company, which is currently under federal investigation.

M. Shadows Defends Ticketmaster: ‘You Don’t Deserve To Get Tickets Automatically Because You’re A Fan’

If you think Ticketmaster sets ticket prices… you’re wrong – artists do.

If the supply is 52 stadiums but the demand is 900 stadiums (per NYT), you are not automatically eligible for tickets because you are a fan. Demand exceeds supply!

In a long period Twitter thread, M. Shadows told his fans, “If you think Ticketmaster sets ticket prices… you’re wrong – artists do. If the supply is 52 stadiums but the demand is 900 stadiums (per NYT), you are not automatically eligible for tickets because you are a fan. Demand outstrips supply!”

“Every dynamic price…. Artists have seen front row tickets go for 10x-20x face value from scalpers but haven’t seen any upside. Ask yourself if that’s fair. It might be annoying… but is it fair?” he asked. “Leave it to famous politicians to be complicit in something they know nothing about… And leave it to artists to shrug their shoulders and point out the fault.”

78% of the fee because they pay the artist 100% of the gate. Music seems to be the only industry where it’s unfair to charge what people are willing to pay

Despite this being a sensitive topic, M. Shadows persisted in replying to multiple users who commented on his post, each offering a different perspective. “My friend, I would pay the most obscene price necessary to see Avenged Sevenfold from the front row (and I have – 2011 Uproar Camden NJ) But 78% of the fee would go to Ticketmaster,” commented one user. “They also encourage scalpers and bots to dynamically inflate ticket prices.”

You are talking about 2 different things… Dynamic pricing artists opt in and they see an increase. You may be talking about after tickets are sold to scalpers they can raise the price beyond the artist’s control. Dynamic pricing has been introduced for artists.

Another user said that the “Critical Union” singer was “very confusing,” adding, “The artist may set the initial price, but then the third-party platform allows them to be reversed / ‘dynamic pricing’ occurs and the ticket price increases. This is not the artist. This is ticket scalping and should be illegal.”

That’s an extreme example but what’s being missed here is that this is a free market… if they’re actually selling the ticket at 68k then it’s actually the right price. People confuse extreme demand and supply here

— M. Shadows (@shadows_eth) November 19, 2022

When another user asked if it was “reasonable” for a fan to pay $68,000 for a ticket, he replied, “That’s an extreme example but what’s being missed here is that this is a free market… if they actually sell those tickets for 68k then it’s actually the right price. People confuse extreme demand and supply here.”

I don’t want to say it… ?

Another fan commented, “Given how many fans are able to enjoy an artist’s music for free, this is the right way for the artist to make up for lost income from record sales. The concert is now the main product and the album is now a marketing tool.”
