Tom Hanks Speaks On Nepotism Debate: ‘It’s A Family Business’

Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks has joined many celebrities to add to the ongoing conversation about nepotism in Hollywood. The topic of nepotism in the film industry is always a topic of discussion; however, it recently became very prevalent after some “nepo babies” were called by New York Magazine.

The popular piece mentions famous actors and shows the part of their family tree that famously helped them get into Hollywood. Famous models, musicians, NBA stars and “industry babies” are also analyzed.

Hanks has four children, and while some have musical interests, all of them have ventured into the acting industry. Elizabeth and Colin are from Hanks’ previous marriage to Samantha Lewes, while he has Chet and Truman in his current marriage to Rita Wilson.

While talking to Sun about his family’s acting career, Hanks mentions and dismisses the ongoing debate about nepotism. The actor’s two older children, Elizabeth and Colin, have appeared in several of his films, with Colin receiving much praise for his performance.

He has starred in films such as “A Friend of the Family” and “The Offer.” Chet and Truman are also in show business; however, the former also has a music career. Truman recently starred alongside Hanks in “A Man Called Otto.”

The Oscar-winning actor explained, “Look, this is a family business. This is what we’ve been doing forever. That’s what all our children grew up with. If we’re a plumbing supply business or if we’re running a flower shop down the road, the whole family will put in the time at some point, even if it’s just inventory at the end of the year.”

Hanks went on to reveal that no matter how famous a person’s last name is or what kind of connections they have in the industry, the only determinant of success is the amount of work done.

“The thing that doesn’t change no matter what happens, no matter what your last name is, is whether it works or not,” said the “Elvis” actor.

Hanks continued, “That’s the issue any time any of us go and try to tell a new story or create something that has a beginning and a middle and an end. It doesn’t matter what our family name is. We have to do the work to make that a true and authentic experience for the audience.”

In addition to Hanks, Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn’s daughter, has previously spoken out about nepotism in the film industry. The actress revealed that she doesn’t care for the term, and that “storytelling” is something that has always been in her blood and most likely in her children.

Hudson said to The Independent, “The nepotism thing, I mean… I don’t really care. I look at my children, and we are a storytelling family. It’s definitely in our blood. People can call it whatever they want, but it’s not going to change that.”

He also mentioned industries where nepotism is more common such as business and politics. “I see it in a business way more than I see it in Hollywood,” he continued. “Sometimes I’ve been in business meetings where I’m like, ‘wait, whose son is this? Like, this person knows nothing!’ I don’t care where you come from or what your relationship is with the business – if you work hard and you kill it, it doesn’t matter.”

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis and singer Lily Allen also questioned the heated conversation about “nepo babies.” As for Curtis, he acknowledged his origins as the son of a movie star but noted that the recent fixation on the topic was only designed to “worse and hurt” people. Although Allen talks about the high probability of “nepo babies” having “narcissistic” parents who do not pay enough attention to them. He also said people should be more concerned about nepotism in other industries such as “law firms.”

Celebrities Nicknamed Because of ‘Baby Nepo’

The article that got everyone talking about nepotism and “nepo babies” in Hollywood was published on December 19 at New York Magazine.

“Bayi Nepo” is a term used to refer to children of famous parents who have walked the same path as their parents and achieved success with little or no effort. In the industry, celebrity nepotism is back; however, “nepo baby” was recently coined and is often used as shorthand to mock him.

The piece titled “Extremely Overanalyzing Hollywood’s Nepo-Baby Boom” was written by Priyanka Mantha and lists the names of successful people who owe their fame to their surnames. Maude Apatow, Lily-Rose Depp, Dakota Johnson, and Zoë Kravitz are among the celebrities emblazoned on the cover of the piece.
