Top Hollywood agent steps down from leadership roles after ‘hurtful’ Israel-Hamas post

A top Hollywood agent has stepped down from his leadership role after being criticized for calling the Israel-Hamas war a “massacre” on social media.

Maha Dakhil, who has worked with high-profile celebrities including Tom Cruise, Reese Witherspoon, Natalie Portman, Ava DuVernay and Anne Hathaway, is stepping down from the internal board at Creative Artists Agency following backlash over her incendiary posts, The Los Angeles Times reported.

On Sunday, CAA confirmed that Dakhil will also, for the time being, relinquish his post as co-head of the film department.

While stepping back from some of his responsibilities, the powerful agent will continue to work with his current A-list clients, CAA said.

Dakhil on Wednesday reposted an Instagram story that read in part, “You are learning who supports genocide.”

In addition to the post, Dakhil wrote, “That’s the line for me.”

He shared a second photo with the caption, “What’s more heartbreaking than witnessing a massacre? Witness the denial that genocide is taking place.”

Shortly after the post was deleted and Dakhil issued an apology to Variety for the “offensive language.”

“I made the mistake of reposting on my Instagram story, which used hurtful language. Like many of us, I have experienced heartbreak. I am proud to be on the side of humanity and peace,” he told Variety.

The agent continued: “I am very grateful to my Jewish friends and colleagues who pointed out the implications and continued to educate me. I immediately took the post down again. I’m sorry for the pain I caused.”

“The choice of words is important. Dialogue is healing. With each painful day that passes, I listen and learn more from my friends. Thank you,” he wrote. “I am holding all of our families in my prayers…I grieve for everyone who is suffering right now. I continue to mourn all the innocent lives. My mission is peace.”

CAA issued its own statement in an October 10 Instagram post standing behind Israel, the Jewish community, and “all innocent victims.”

“CAA stands with the people of Israel, the Jewish community, and all innocent victims in the face of horrific acts of terrorism,” the talent agency wrote. “For those who have family, friends or loved ones living in or connected to Israel and the region, our thoughts are with you. We pray for peace for everyone. You can join us in supporting the following humanitarian organizations working to provide aid and relief resources.”
