Tristan Thompson Granted Guardianship Of Brother Amari

Tristan Thompson is now the legal guardian of his brother, Amari Thompson.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, the court granted Khloe Kardashian’s ex-boyfriend the authority to provide care and make medical decisions for Amari.

The court found that Tristan provided “sufficient evidence” to grant him custody of his special needs sibling.

To that end, the professional basketball player now has “estate power”, allowing him to effectively manage Amari’s finances and assets.

Notably, he was given no additional powers, with the court saying the Canadian-American would have to post a bond of $114,858. He is also expected to submit a list of all those he is responsible for on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

If there are non-cash items on the list, the Probate Judge, who is authorized by the state comptroller, will figure out how much they are worth. Additionally, the court ruled that Amari was born in Canada and is a Canadian citizen.

The legal filing states it is impossible to reunite Amari with one parent due to neglect and abandonment under California law. Furthermore, the document claims that Amari has no interest in returning to his parents’ previous country of citizenship — Canada.

Amari lived with her mother, Andrea Brooks, until her sudden death in January 2023. After her death, Tristan filed a guardianship petition, stating that “Amari has been in (Tristan’s) custody and he has provided care, maintenance, and support to Amari .”

In the filing, the 32-year-old accuses her brother’s father, Trevor Thompson, of being a deadbeat, writing that he “has been actively absent from Amari’s life since Andrea Brooks received Amari’s sole custody and support order against Trevor Thompson in July 2014. “

He then added that Trevor “has never met any of his support obligations to Amari and has actively avoided them” before detailing that the patriarch “has effectively abandoned the proposed ward; he has failed to pay child support despite court orders and has had no contact with the ward proposed or Andrea Marie Brooks since July 2014.”

Tristan further claims that Trevor has done nothing to help or raise Amari since her mother died and has effectively given up all say in the child’s custody.

Amid the good news for the Thompson brothers, it’s worth noting that the Court will not rule in Tristan’s favor if the Department of Children and Family Services [DCFS] in Los Angeles have discovered the mistake during their investigation.

Although investigative records are sealed because Amari is a minor, we reported in October that CPS had filed a report on its findings.

Tristan Owes $225,000 In Child Support To Ex

News of Tristan’s custody case comes after he was accused of owing the mother of his first child, Jordan Craig, nearly $225,000 in child support.

Craig, who has a son named Prince with Tristan, filed a petition in September 2023 asking the court to tell the Cleveland Cavaliers to stop paying him until he pays his debt in full.

Tristan was ordered in April 2019 to pay Craig $40,000 every month until their son turns 18, which is common in child support cases. However, the mother-of-one claims that her baby daddy started missing payments in November 2022 when he only paid half of the amount.

He paid the entire amount the following month, but in January 2023, he allegedly paid nothing. From February 2023 to August 2023, he made partial payments, with the highest payment being $29,000 in August 2023.

In total, over nine months, Tristan paid just $136,000 in child support, leaving $224,000 unpaid. In his filing, Craig stated that the Court issued a WRIT of Execution for $232,763.97 in child support arrears, but it had no effect.

With the father of four signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers in September, Craig believes it’s time for him to pay off his debt.
