Trump changes tune on VP Kamala Harris, now says she’s ‘better’ than Biden despite her ‘bad’ moments

Former President Donald Trump discussed Vice President Kamala Harris during an interview on Friday, saying he now believes she is a “better” choice for the Democratic nomination than President Biden.

“I think he’s better than he is, actually,” Trump, 77, told radio host Hugh Hewitt afterward given an unsatisfactory answer to former Fox News host Tucker Carlson in August when asked the same question.

The former president told Carlson during an interview broadcast on X that “a lot of people” – although he never said who – wanted Harris to start the Democratic ticket in 2024 and that his public appearance had a “bad” effect.

“I don’t think anybody else is going to support him,” Trump said of Harris being eliminated as Biden’s running mate. “He has some bad moments. His moments are almost as bad as he is, I think he’s worse actually.”

“He’s talking in, uh, in rhyme. That’s weird. It’s weird,” Trump added. “The way he’s talking, ‘The bus is going to go here. And then the bus will go there. Because that’s what buses do.’ That’s weird. Everything is strange.”

During an October 2022 speech in Seattle to tout the Biden administration’s $1 billion in electric school bus funding, Harris reflected on the “nostalgia” of seeing “yellow school buses” as he called them.

“Who doesn’t like a yellow school bus, right? Can you raise your hand if you like yellow school buses? Many of us go to school on the yellow school bus, right? It’s part of our experience growing up,” he said in a speech at Lumen Field.

“It’s part of the nostalgia, the memories of the fun and joy of going to school to be with your favorite teacher, to be with your best friends and to learn. The school bus takes us there.”

Trump has told Carlson that he expects Democrats to host “some kind of primary and other people will be involved,” naming California’s Gavin Newsom as one of the potential Democratic challengers.

“Mr. President, if people voted for Joe Biden, did they really vote for Kamala Harris? Hewitt initially asked.

“I think so,” Trump replied. “I mean, let’s see what happens. I’m not sure that he made it to the starting gate, to be honest. I don’t know… It seems like he’s locked in with her for a lot of reasons.

“It looks like the Democrats, if he’s not running, will have to handle it,” he added. “That’s what all the professionals like you say. I’m not sure that’s right, but that’s what they say.

“Yes, you are locked with him. And he might be, I can’t say worse. I thought he was better than he was, actually. I actually think so.”

The former president referred to the 81-year-old Biden as “very incompetent” earlier in the interview but added he was also effective “25 years ago” while serving as a US senator.

“He is not fit for office. And I really think he is a danger to democracy. I truly believe it’s because of his incompetence,” Trump said, echoing the Democrats’ signature line of attack on his own candidacy.

Harris recently slammed Trump for saying illegal immigrants entering the US through the southern border are “poisoning the blood of our country,” before failing to try to illustrate the importance of next year’s election.

“You know, every election cycle we talk about this is the most election in our lifetime,” Harris told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell on “The Last Word.”

“Lawrence, this one, this one,” he added, without correcting himself.
