Donald Trump is distancing himself from a controversial lawyer who once vowed to “unleash the Kraken” to help the former president overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Trump released a post on his Social media site Truth on Sunday, claiming that Sidney Powell was “never” his lawyer just days after Powell cut a plea deal with Fulton County prosecutors.
“Despite Fake News reporting otherwise, and without contacting the Trump Campaign, MS. POWELL IS NOT MY LAWYER, AND NEVER WAS,” Trump insisted.
“Powell is one of millions of people who thought, and in growing numbers still think, correctly, that the 2020 Presidential Election was STOLEN & STOLEN, AND OUR COUNTRY’S SPIRIT WAS DESTROYED BECAUSE!!!”
Powell, 68, pleaded guilty last week to six misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to interfere in an election. The plea deal was made in exchange for a fine, a letter of apology and a commitment to testify in an upcoming Fulton County case.

He is one of 19 individuals charged in a Georgia election interference case led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in August.
A day after Powell’s deal, co-accused attorney Kenneth Chesebro took a last minute plea deal last Friday agreeing to testify in future cases.
Trump has been slapped with 13 charges in the Fulton County case and has already pleaded not guilty.

Powell quickly gained notoriety for peddling dubious claims about fraud in the 2020 election and at one point vowed to “unleash the Kraken” in his bid to keep Trump in office.
A few days after the 2020 election, Trump united Powell with his lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis in a post on Twitter, now X.
But his campaign’s legal team later clarified at the time that he was not part of the team.

Powell is known to have participated in various strategy sessions and meetings with Trump allies seeking to overturn the 2020 election, including a White House gathering on Dec. 18, 2020.
Trump suggested Powell would be “conflicted” from representing him, citing his past unsuccessful legal defense of retired lieutenant general Michael Flynn for making false statements to the FBI. Trump later pardoned Flynn.
“Ms. Powell did a brave job representing General Mike Flynn who was treated very unfairly and abused by the government, but was unsuccessful. Her prosecution, despite the facts, was brutal,” Trump added.

“He is an innocent man, just like most of the innocent people being persecuted by our Fascist government today, and I am happy to grant him a Full Pardon!”
The 77-year-old former president faces 91 criminal charges in four cases in Georgia, Manhattan, South Florida and Washington.
Trump has denied wrongdoing on all sides.
