Trump has favorability edge with these key voter groups in swing districts as 2024 race heats up: poll

Former President Donald Trump is viewed more favorably than President Biden among suburban and independent voters in 2024 swing districts, according to a new poll.

The Cygnal poll found Trump with a 43% approval rating among suburbanites and a 40% approval rating among independents in the 39 House battleground districts.

Only 29% of both voter groups approve of Biden’s job performance, while 60% of likely independents and 63% of likely suburban voters disapprove of the 81-year-old president.

Trump, 77, has a 49% disapproval rating with both groups polled.

Overall, the former president earned a 45% approval rating in the survey, while Biden posted a 37% approval rating. Vice President Kamala Harris got the same score as her running mate, with 37% having a favorable view and 57% viewing her unfavorably.

The candidates polled across the surveyed districts, with 45% of voters supporting Trump, 44% supporting Biden and 11% undecided.

Most notably, the independent candidacy of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. nor does replacing Trump with another Republican improve Biden’s standing with voters.

With RFK Jr. in the race, 41% of swing district voters will still support Trump, 37% will vote for Biden and 11% will vote for Kennedy.

Non-GOP candidate Trump would tie Biden at 40% apiece, while increasing the number of undecided voters to 21%. Second-place GOP primary contender Nikki Haley was not even considered in the polls.

Another Democratic presidential candidate besides Biden will also lose to Trump by a three-point margin.

“Trump’s absence from the ballot is likely to result in lower turnout,” said Brock McCleary, Cygnal’s vice president of polling. “In other words, Republicans have more to lose than to gain without Trump on the ballot.”

Further polls show Republicans have higher levels of trust than likely voters in swing district races, raising the possibility that some New York congressional districts flipped by new GOP members in 2022 will remain red.

The generic GOP candidate has a two-point advantage over Democrats with all swing district voters, a one-point advantage with suburban voters and a 10-point advantage with independent voters.

Majorities of voters trust Republicans more to handle border security (56%) than Democrats (26%), and double-digit leads are held among independent, Hispanic and suburban voters.

A large number (46%) also have confidence that GOP lawmakers will do a better job dealing with crime than Democrats (31%) — as well as inflation (45% to 36%).

Nearly three in 10 battleground voters (29%) list inflation as their top issue in the 2024 election.

However, swing districts are at odds with Republicans on the issue of abortion, with nearly half (49%) seeing the GOP candidate as more extreme than the Democrat.

More than six in 10 (63%) want abortion to be legal, and 48% believe the federal government should liberalize restrictions on the procedure.

The poll of swing districts also found that the Democratic coalition is split, with 22% of voters making less than $75,000 who believe their party should focus on fixing inflation and 23% who believe it should address “threats to democracy.”
