Trump lays out criteria for his vice presidential pick while teasing shortlist: ‘A lot of good people’

Former President Donald Trump looked at his criteria for choosing a vice president and acknowledged some staff mishaps during his first administration.

“It must be who will be a good president. You have to always think that,” Trump told Fox Business Network’s “Sunday Morning Futures.” “I have a lot of good people. We have a lot of really good people.

“I have a lot of good ideas, but I don’t have — and there’s no reason to do so quickly,” he added, before calling Sen. Tim Scott (RS.C.) is a “real tiger” and praised South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem for not running against him.

Trump said he would not announce his VP pick for “temporary” and also admitted to making personnel mistakes in his first term.

“Of course, but everyone does. Obama has. What about Biden? Look at the people running this Biden thing. The difference is, I fire people,” Trump said when pressed by host Maria Bartiromo. “I fired Comey. I got rid of him.”

The 77-year-old former president explained that he was an outsider before taking office in 2016 and now knows more about political talent.

“I also know people I didn’t know before. I know now that’s smart. I know that’s stupid. I know the weak and the strong.”

Trump revealed he intends to bring some old Cabinet members back in a hypothetical second term.

In another interview, emphasizing that Chinese leader Xi Jinping was “my best friend during my term,” Trump predicted that China would interfere in the 2024 election against him.

“I think they will. And they will not intervene on my behalf. We have to go to vote on the same day, ballot paper, voter ID, and no ballot papers come in,” he said.

Xi reportedly promised President Biden that China would not interfere in the 2024 race. Trump went on to suggest that he plans to impose more than the 60% tariffs on China that he is rumored to be considering.

When asked about how he would bring the “anti-Trumpers” back on board, Trump highlighted his record on domestic policy.

“I don’t know if they are really anti-Trumpers. They want – they want security. They want security. They want a great economy. They want a strong border,” he said.

He said that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) wants to support me, that’s what I heard.” Trump has long hammered McConnell and launched inflammatory attacks against his wife.

At one point, Trump weighed in on the Republican National Committee’s dismal fundraising numbers. The RNC started the year with $8 million in cash on hand, the lowest total since 2013, compared to the Democratic National Committee’s $21 million in cash on hand.

Trump stated that he had “a lot of money” and then insinuated that RNC chair Ronna McDaniel might need to be replaced.

“I thought he did his best when he ran Michigan for me. I thought he was OK at first at the RNC. I would say, right now, there might be some changes made,” he said.

In the run-up to the November 5 election, Trump had been charged with 91 criminal charges.

“It’s all about courage. You have to have courage for the country,” he said. “If I didn’t compete or if I was in fifth place, I wouldn’t have any charges.”

“Anytime I get charged, it’s an honor, because I do it for you and people agree with it.”

Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him and denies wrongdoing.

Last week in Manhattan federal court, the former president was awarded an $83.3 million jury verdict for defaming advice columnist E. Jean Carroll.

Biden and his allies have cast Trump as a threat to democracy and drawn attention to remarks he made on Fox News last December about being a dictator for a day.

“Now, that was said in jest,” Trump explained. “Biden is not good for democracy because he is incompetent,” he added later.

One particular issue Trump is interested in is the Iranian proxy attack that killed three US soldiers in Jordan last month.

“Would never happen to me. I control Iran,” he said. “I can’t tell you what I did. I know exactly what I’m going to do. It’s subject to change, of course, but I know what I’m going to do.”

Biden has ordered counterstrikes against targets in the region in response. So far, the US has carried out at least two such attacks, including in parts of Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.

Back in December, The Post reported that Trump was eyeing a rally in the Bronx as he tried to expand the general election map.

“Yes, I think I will,” Trump said. “I think I’ll do it maybe at Madison Square Garden, too.”
