Trump leads Biden in Michigan, Georgia despite indictment: poll

Former President Donald Trump is running ahead of President Biden in two battleground states — including one where he’s been impeached for trying to overturn the 2020 election, according to a new poll.

A poll conducted by SSRS for CNN found Michigan registered voters split for Trump by double digits (50% to 40%) over Biden, while Georgia registered voters favored the former president over his successor by five percentage points (49% to 44%).

Polls of the 2024 matchup also found Trump, 77, winning support from absentee voters in 2020 by a 26-point margin in Georgia and a 40-point margin in Michigan.

Registered voters who cast ballots for Biden, 81, in 2020 also split for Trump in those two states.

Trump lost both Michigan and Georgia in 2020 and was indicted in the Peach State last August — along with 18 co-defendants — for his attempt to overturn Biden’s victory there.

More than 60% of voters said Biden legitimately won both states last time, according to a CNN poll, compared to slightly more than a third who disagreed.

The poll also revealed 52% of registered Georgia voters approved of Trump’s impeachment by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis — but 53% believed the accusations were either disqualifying or irrelevant to his eligibility for the White House, even if true.

In Michigan, the same percentage also believed Trump’s criminal case was not disqualifying or irrelevant, while 46% said the charges would prevent him from serving a second term if true.

The 45th president also faces federal indictments alleging that he made “consciously false” allegations of voter fraud in the last presidential election, as well as that he illegally kept sensitive national security information after leaving office.

Biden lags behind Trump in voters’ ratings of the candidate’s policy positions, ability to understand the problems facing the American people and acumen and stamina, polls show.

Majorities of registered voters in Michigan (54%) and Georgia (52%) said Trump’s policy positions were either their own or pretty close.

Conversely, 57% in Michigan and 54% in Georgia say Biden’s policy stances are not what they want in a president.

About half of voters in both states also say the former president has the ability to understand the plight of people like them — with Biden trailing Trump by eight percentage points in that category in Michigan (48% to 40%) and six percentage points in Georgia (50% to 44%).

However, a majority of voters in battleground states also said Trump lacked the temperament they were looking for in a president.
