Trump leads Haley by a more than 2-to-1 margin in South Carolina: poll

Donald Trump continues to lead Nikki Haley in the South Carolina Republican primary race — despite a recent spate of negative ads attacking his rival, according to an internal poll conducted by a super PAC supporting the former president.

Trump, 77, leads Nikki Haley by more than 2 to 1 in the Palmetto State, where the 52-year-old White House candidate was born and raised and served as governor for six years, according to a poll released by Fabrizio, Lee and Associates on Tuesday.

“Nikki Haley and her DC establishment allies spent millions of dollars to try and salvage a failed campaign that couldn’t articulate a path to victory in South Carolina — or any other state for that matter,” a memo released by the polling firm along with its survey findings sounded

“The polls, which are statistically unchanged from our last survey, show these efforts are not having an impact.”

The poll of 600 South Carolina voters, conducted between January 28 and January 29, found Trump ahead of Haley by a 35-point margin – 66% to 31%.

A majority of Trump supporters, 59%, responded that they would “definitely” vote for the former president in the South Carolina primary, while only 24% of Haley supporters said the same.

Trump also leads by double digits among voters who believe Haley is doing a good job as governor of South Carolina.

“Of the 69% who approve of his governor’s job performance, Trump still won by a significant margin, 56%-40%,” the poll said.

Attack ads against Trump in South Carolina also did little to win support for Haley.

Among the 59% of South Carolinians who saw negative ads targeting the former president, Trump led 64% to Haley’s 33%.

The appeal of former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.)’s recent call for Haley to stay in the race until at least Super Tuesday has also backfired on the former South Carolina governor, the poll found.

Only 17% of those polled had a favorable opinion of Cheney, while 58% had an unfavorable view of the former congressman.

As a result, Trump’s support remained steady at 66%, while Haley’s support dropped to 29% when voters were presented with information about Cheney’s support for the former state governor.

“Despite her positive job approval ratings and millions in attack ads against President Trump, Republican Primary voters in South Carolina remain unmoved by Haley’s feeble attempts to change their minds,” the memo concluded. “South Carolina remains Trump country.”

The South Carolina GOP primary will be held on February 24.
