Trump says he’ll debate Biden, would spar with GOP rival ‘if it’s very close’ after New Hampshire primary

Former President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that he may be ready to take the stage at a future Republican primary debate when only one challenger remains between him and the party’s 2024 nomination.

Trump, 77, has declined to participate in any of the four forums approved by the Republican National Committee, citing his dominance in the polls, but the GOP frontrunner told radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt that may change if his lead shrinks as the primary field shrinks.

“Yes, I would, if it was really close. I would debate that Republican,” Trump told Hewitt when asked if he would join the last Republican in the race after the Jan. 23 New Hampshire primary.

“But it’s not close,” the former president hastily added.

No GOP debate is currently scheduled to take place after the nation’s first primary.

The RNC announced earlier this month that it will not hold any primary debates in January, but will allow candidates to participate in unofficial debates organized by the media.

Nevada, which will hold a Feb. 6 primary and Feb. 8 caucus, and South Carolina, which holds a Feb. 24 primary, are the next nominating contests on the schedule after New Hampshire.

Trump also promised to debate President Biden if both are nominated as their party’s standard bearer, though he fears the organization responsible for conducting the general election debates is biased in favor of Democrats.

“Oh, will I look forward to it,” Trump said of the prospect of meeting the 81-year-old incumbent. “How about 10 debates?”

“They are really corrupt. They’re really leaning toward Democrats … and they’re terrible,” Trump said of the Commission on Presidential Debates, accusing the group of “turning off” his microphone during one of his 2020 debates with Biden.

“With that, I will do 20 debates even if it is organized by them,” he added. “I will do as many debates as they want. I would argue every night with this guy. But he will never appear in the debate.”
