Bonnie Raitt was trending on Twitter Monday morning for quite a reason!
Many Twitter users experienced a moment in their musical education when they learned of Raitt’s existence for the first time!
“I Can’t Make You Love Me” is no stranger to Grammy Awards. The 73-year-old has won a legendary 13 statues and added another to his collection at the 2023 awards ceremony for Song Of The Year, which he won for “Just Like That.”

Aside from his win, Raitt’s presence at the event was well known. The camera panned to him several times throughout the broadcast, and he joined Sheryl Crowe and Mick Fleetwood on stage to pay tribute to Christine McVie during the ‘In Memoriam’ segment.
Not all Grammy viewers knew who Raitt was, and many took to Twitter to voice their confusion. Others took some time to explain his legacy (and expressed their dismay at some users’ acceptance of Raitt on the platform).

Taylor Swift was also brought into the discourse.

Swift is always present at The Grammy’s, even when she doesn’t perform. The “Anti-Hero” singer got the win; he will then thank you to the Recording Academy after winning ‘Best Music Video’ for the music video “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor Version)”! The song was also nominated for Song Of The Year.
The Swift-related Twitter chat was nothing to celebrate. Swift and Raitt were often mentioned in joint tweets, and the conversation seemed to focus on several ‘Swifties’ allegedly ‘bullying’ the “Something To Talk About” singer over her Grammy win.
“As a Swiftie, it’s a shame to see some other Swifties disrespecting Bonnie Raitt. Before disrespecting Bonnie Raitt, think about how Taylor Swift doesn’t want hate in the fandom and how upset she would be to see some Swifties disrespecting Bonnie Raitt,” Swift fans appeal to their fellow Swifties.
“Ok Swifties relax… Bonnie Raitt is a good songwriter,” a user writes. “@taylorswift13, you may not have won Song Of The Year @ the #grammys, but I still am [heart] you as a singer, songwriter, and person. Cheers to a great music career so far #TaylorSwift you will always be the queen of the queens,” they concluded.
“Let Bonnie Raitt enjoy her celebration,” tweeted another Swiftie. “Swifties- Taylor is graceful and so are we,” they continued with a heart emoji.
“A casual reminder to unhinged swifties not to send hate to Bonnie Raitt. blame the academy- not Bonnie. he was as surprised as we all were. The Grammys are always a scam and whether taylor wins AOTY or not doesn’t change that,” another Swiftie added weighed.
“Kept seeing tweets from angry swifties that some ‘random lady’ beat taylor for song of the year so I finally looked and it was BONNIE RAITT? Bonnie Raitt is a random woman to you??? please,” a surprised Swiftie spoke up.

The discourse also touched on how Raitt was portrayed in the headlines from several branchescovering his Song Of The Year Win.
The Daily Mail posted that Raitt beat out several artists including Swift and Beyonce, and referred to Rait as an “unknown blues singer.” The headlines also reflected shock at Raitt’s win.
One user listed Raitt’s multiple accolades to his name, including mentions of his Grammy win, and his Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame membership status.
“If it wasn’t for her or artists like joni mitchell, taylor swift wouldn’t be playing music right now,” they said also wrote in a tweet response.
The Daily Mail later edited its headline. It now reads, “So who is Bonnie Raitt,” and describes her win as a “shocking moment.”
First Lady Dr. Jill Biden was present to present the award to Raitt.
“I’m so shocked, I don’t know what to say,” Raitt said in a speech to the outlet. “I don’t write many songs but I’m so proud that you appreciate this song. I am truly humbled.” “Just Like That” was inspired by both organ donor and late country music legend John Prine. (via Daily Mail)
