Two separate Walmart shootings within 24 hours leave 3 dead: reports

Shootings took place at two US Walmart locations this week that left three dead in a 24-hour period, according to reports.

On Monday, a gunman opened fire on an Ohio Walmart, wounding four shoppers before shooting himself.

A day earlier, a suspect shot dead a man and a woman on their way to a Walmart store in Alaska.

One of the worst mass shootings in recent years also happened at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, when gunman Patrick Crusius killed 23 people in a racist attack in August 2019.

Gunfire rang out at the discount retailer again Sunday afternoon in Alaska when a suspect opened fire at a Walmart in South Anchorage, killing a man and a woman.

A firearm was recovered at the scene, although as of Monday, the shooter was still at large, the Anchorage Police Department said in an update posted to Facebook.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the victim’s body with gunshot wounds in the parking lot, near the store’s entrance.

“That happened right outside the main entrance. It’s just crazy,” Sean Keating, an APD officer and scene team leader, told Alaska Public Media.

The Walmart store — located less than half a mile from the Dimond Center, Alaska’s largest mall — was closed following the incident, and officials helped shoppers and employees through the parking lot to their cars.

Police shared in a Facebook update Monday night that the victim was transported to a local hospital, “and their condition is unknown at this time.”

The shooter – who has yet to be identified – was reportedly armed with an assault rifle, witnesses told 5 News Online.

“This remains an evolving situation, and we are working closely with investigators on the scene,” the Arkansas-based retailer added.

Walmart did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the shooting.
