U2 may have finally found what they were looking for.
The beloved Irish rock band officially christened the Sphere — the 20,000-capacity, $2.2 billion state-of-the-art venue from the Madison Square Garden Company — Friday night in Las Vegas.
For months now, it has grabbed the world’s attention for its large exterior that doubles as a video screen that is quickly becoming a staple on the Sin City strip.
The term immersive does not do this production the justice it deserves.
Watching U2 perform their “Achtung Baby” album was surreal — like watching a detailed music video, visual effects and all, with the band actually playing live. Some may prefer to watch the screen on stage.
The visuals – like a rainbow version of the matrix-looking letters running from bottom to top across the arena – are “Dr. Strange-esque” in their dimensions and ability to create a moving sensation that, when paired with excellent music, is euphoric, to say the least. lack.
“Elvis definitely didn’t leave this building,” Bono told a sold-out crowd of 20,000 raving fans at the start of the show, then called Sphere and MSG owner James Dolan “crazy” for coming up with the concept.
The singer also paid tribute to the locals by rocking out to U2’s new track “Atomic City” as a massive visual of the Vegas skyline appeared overhead. The band kicks off a three-month “U2:UV Live at Sphere Las Vegas” residency – tickets ranging from more than $200 to nearly $8,000 – through a show packed with more than 20 iconic rock songs worthy of the big name venue .
“We moved into Madison Square Garden and took ownership,” Dolan exclusively told The Post. “We didn’t build it, we created it from the ground up. So this one, yeah — it’s probably the most passionate business project I’ve ever had.”

Paul McCartney, best friend of “Breaking Bad” Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre — along with some MSG familiar faces in Rangers alum Henrik Lundqvist, Adam Graves and Stephane Matteau — are just part of the A-list take in the grand opening that legitimately can’t be experienced anywhere else in the world.
Bono delighted fans by saying the name “Macca” — aka McCartney — and announcing the presence of the Beatles legend in the audience. The band went into crowd-pleasing portions of McCartney’s Fab Four hits “Love Me Do,” “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)” and “Blackbird.”
He also noted how Sphere solved the problem The Beatles had at Shea Stadium in the 1960s because no one could hear them in the ope.

In addition to a few songs from their own “Rattle and Hum,” Bono and The Edge bandmates Adam Clayton and Bram van den Berg — while celebrating his birthday — rocked plenty of covers of classic songs by other artists.
Among the standouts: Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” Elvis Presley’s “Love Me Tender,” Prince’s “Purple Rain” and Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic.”
Enduring congestion pays off in every inch of the Sphere’s unashamedly ambitious technology.
Dolan also explained to The Post how the Sphere’s stunning atrium — complete with humanoid robots, a make-your-own avatar station, among more embracing AI and groundbreaking sound engineering — took a lot of inspiration from his Radio City Music Hall.
After all, Radio City was considered one of the most high-tech places in the world when it was founded almost a century ago.
As impressive as the light show was — the crowd didn’t even notice U2 ducking backstage at one point — the uniquely shaped Sphere could easily lose a sense of dimension.
At that moment, all eyes are focused on nothing but center stage, hypnosis while surrounded by pitch black or the soft yet hyperrealistic star show in the night sky.

It achieves Goldilocks decibels for not blowing out the eardrums yet still making a profound statement. Adding another flavor to the mix, a gentle yet artificial breeze will cross your path in keeping with what’s on display from time to time as well.
Final verdict: Basically, every chair is the best in the house.
That’s an understatement for what Sphere, U2 and future guests at this venue seem set to experience as this much-hyped venue attempts to change the live music performance game.
