Ukraine damages Putin’s warship in Crimea with missile strike, Russia claims

A Ukrainian missile attack on a shipyard in Crimea over the weekend struck at least one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warships, the Kremlin claimed late Saturday.

About 15 cruise missiles rained down on the Saliva shipyard in Kerch, which is about 600 miles south of Kyiv and is located in the eastern part of the Crimean Peninsula, in the Kremlin.

Moscow said its air defense system successfully countered 13 missiles, but acknowledged that some had managed to penetrate and hit a ship, but did not say how much damage was done.

“On November 4, the Ukrainian military launched 15 cruise missiles at the BE Butoma (Zaliv) shipyard in the city of Kerch, the Russian defense ministry said, according to a translation.

“The air defense system shot down 13 cruise missiles. As a result of being hit by an enemy cruise missile, a ship located at the plant was damaged.”

Sergei Aksyonov, the Russian-implanted governor of Crimea, also confirmed the attack.

“A fragment of a missile fell into the territory of one of the dry docks,” Aksyonov wrote in a Telegram post. “There were no casualties.”

Ukraine acknowledged the strike as well.

Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk said the naval area hit by the strike was home to “one of the most modern ships of the Russian Black Sea fleet in the shipyard – the Kalibr cruise missile carrier.”

Based on Oleshchuk’s statement, it is unclear whether that particular ship was actually damaged in the operation.

An observer — military analyst Andriy Tsaplienko — speculated in a Telegram post that based on preliminary information, the attack was on the Russian Askold missile ship, which was launched in 2021.

The operation took place not far from the main bridge between Crimea and Russia.

It illustrates Ukraine’s ability to hit potential targets in Russia’s Black Sea fleet.

Moscow seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and Russian settlers have flocked to the peninsula despite Ukraine’s efforts to limit water supplies and insist Crimea is theirs.

Since the Russian invasion in 2022, Kyiv has carried out occasional attacks on the peninsula, including at a relatively frequent rate of late.

In September, a Ukrainian attack damaged two Russian ships in the port city of Sevastopol.

The Russian headquarters for its navy in Sevastopol was also attacked in the same month.

Recently, the US agreed to send the ATACMS — Army Tactical Missile System — a long-range weapon that President Biden has long opposed being sent to the war-torn country.

Ukraine used the ATACMS in an attack last month and the weapon has the potential to force Russian air power back onto the battlefield, easing some pressure on Ukraine’s position.

Behind the scenes US and European officials have quietly floated the prospect of negotiating a peace deal to end 20 months of fierce fighting, NBC reported.

Biden is trying to pressure Congress to pass an additional $106 billion aid package that would allocate about $61.4 billion to Ukraine.

But the move has drawn fierce opposition from House Republicans who want to “branch off” aid to Israel and Ukraine.

Newly crowned House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has indicated an openness to taking up a separate package featuring both Ukraine aid and border security.
