Ukraine launches drones on Moscow, Belgorod following Crimea air raid

Ukraine launched drone strikes on Moscow and the border region of Belgorod, causing at least four Russian airports to be temporarily closed Saturday.

The attack came a day after Ukraine launched an airstrike on a military base in Crimea.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said an air defense system shot down the drone over the Istra district, about 30 miles west of the Kremlin, early Saturday.

Russia claimed it intercepted two more drones late Saturday in the Belgorod region, as Ukraine stepped up its cross-border attacks.

Six people were wounded by gunfire in the border town as well, Moscow said.

The attack temporarily halted flights at three major airports serving the capital, as well as one near Belgorod.

The attempted attack follows one of the largest coordinated airstrikes in Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence agency confirmed a drone struck a Russian military base in Crimea on Friday, where residents reported deaths and explosions.

Russia, however, maintains its air defense system shot down all 42 drones that attacked Crimea before they hit their targets.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley said Ukrainian counterattacks had penetrated the front line of Russian defenses and liberated part of Russian-occupied territory.

Milley on Friday called the progress of the counterattack “bloody, long, and slow,” in an interview with Al-Mamlaka.

“Especially on the axis of advance that they are attacking now, they have attacked through the first main defense belt,” said Milley. “This line of defense, which the Russians spent months preparing, it has minefields, it has dragon’s teeth, it has tank trenches. It is a very complex set of defense preparations that Ukraine is fighting for.”

The counteroffensive has put pressure on Russian forces in Bakhmut – the site of some of the fiercest fighting of the war – and southern Ukraine, where it is gradually gaining ground, according to intelligence updates. published by the UK Ministry of Defense Saturday.

Russia continues to launch small-scale attacks in the northeast, where it has also been able to make some progress, according to the agency.

Two people were killed Saturday when Russian gunfire hit a cafe in the village of Podoly in eastern Kharkiv province.
