Ukrainian-born Miss Japan gives up crown after tabloid exposes affair with married ‘muscle doctor’

The controversial Ukrainian-born Miss Japan winner has relinquished her crown after a magazine revealed her affair with a married man.

Karolina Shiino, 26, wrote on Instagram Monday that she offered to give up her title just two weeks after getting it, while also parting ways with her modeling agency over her tryst scandal with an influencer known as the “muscle doctor.”

“I am very sorry for causing such a big problem and acting as if I betrayed everyone who supported me,” Shiino said.

The Weekly Bonshun magazine reported last week that the newly crowned beauty queen has been in a relationship with a doctor and social media influencer, Takuma Maeda, who is married.

Shiino initially confirmed the relationship but claimed she didn’t know her lover was married.

Later, he admitted that his initial answer was “not true,” and that he knew that Maeda, known as the “muscle doctor,” had a wife.

Shiino apologizes for lying, saying that she was in a state of shock and fear over the revelation and panicked.

He also apologized to the Maeda family.

Shiino was crowned the newest Miss Japan on January 22, sparking criticism that she is of Ukrainian origin and looks Caucasian.

The Miss Japan organization confirmed on Tuesday that Shiino’s relinquishment of her title had been accepted and the slot for the 2024 winner would remain vacant for the rest of the year.

The beauty pageant said it “takes seriously our responsibility for causing the uproar” and apologized to sponsors, judges and others involved.

It said it initially defended Shiino based on her explanation that her boyfriend told her she was divorced and that he broke up with her when he found out the truth.

Maeda wrote on Instagram that he had no intention of divorcing his wife and apologized for causing trouble to Shiino and others. He promised to devote himself to his work and personal life.

Shiino was born to Ukrainian parents in her native country and moved to Japan at the age of five when her mother remarried a Japanese man.

He is fluent in Japanese and will become a naturalized Japanese citizen in 2022.

Shiino says she has a strong Japanese identity like everyone else despite her appearance.

“I had to face obstacles that often prevented me from being accepted as a Japanese person, so I am grateful that I was recognized at this competition as a Japanese person,” he said after winning the competition last month.
