United Airlines flight makes emergency landing after open door light illuminates shortly after takeoff

A United Airlines flight from Sarasota, Florida made an emergency landing at a nearby airport after the door-open indicator light came on Wednesday, less than a week after an Alaska Airlines door plug broke mid-flight.

United Flight 2434 was en route to Chicago when the lights came on, prompting the pilot to alert dispatchers and divert the plane to Tampa, according to an airport spokeswoman.

The plane took off from Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport at 3:42 p.m. and was diverted to Tampa International Airport, where it landed safely at 4:35 p.m., according to flight tracking website Flight Aware.

The plane — carrying 123 passengers and five crew members — made an emergency landing “as a precaution this afternoon to address possible mechanical problems,” a United spokeswoman told The Post.

The airline did not immediately say whether the issue was related to the door open light, but a Tampa International Airport spokeswoman said dispatchers received a call that referenced exactly when runway space was being requested for an emergency landing.

United Airlines is one of two American companies that operate a Boeing 737 Max 9 — like the one that lost its door plug mid-air on Friday.

But the plane diverted to Tampa Wednesday was an Airbus A319.

The FAA has grounded 171 Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft “until operators complete enhanced inspections including both left and right cabin door exit plugs, door components and fasteners.”

Both United and Alaska Airlines have found loose hardware on some of their planes in their fleet of Max 9s.

Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 from Portland, Oregon was forced to make a dramatic emergency landing last Friday after a door plug dislodged and left a gaping hole in the side of the plane 16,000 feet in the air.

The rapid drop in pressure sucked a teenager’s shirt right off his back as well as seat headrests and other passenger items including cellphones — some of which landed in residents’ yards.

Miraculously, none of the 171 passengers and six crew members were seriously injured.
