US Army servicewoman and fitness influencer Michelle Young dies by suicide, leaving friends shocked

A US Army soldier with a popular fitness and fashion account on Instagram has died by suicide, devastated friends shared on Saturday.

Staff Sergeant Michelle Young, 34, took her own life, leaving her 12-year-old daughter’s friends who she described as “her whole world” in a heartbreaking GoFundMe post.

“Michelle was a beautiful soul, an amazing friend, single mom, soldier, and proof that you never know what someone is going through or what demons they may be fighting,” friend Sarah Maine wrote on the page.

“We will never fill the emptiness of our hearts and will always be left with questions,” he added.

Young has served in the military for 16 years, first enlisting when he was about 18. During that time he completed two tours in Afghanistan, the Daily Mail reported.

Just days before news of his death broke, Young had posted a birthday message on Instagram for his daughter, Gracie.

“Happy birthday to the sweetest girl I’ve ever known,” he wrote. “The best part of my life is being your mom.”

Staff Sergeant Michelle Young died by suicide in recent days. It is unclear what led to the tragedy.

Friends have recalled how close Young and Gracie were, with many photos on social media showing the doting mother and daughter. Just this past Halloween, the pair dressed up as Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift.

Young has amassed over 100,000 followers on her Instagram account where she models clothing from an athletic apparel company that focuses on female veterans. The influence advocates for better mental health treatment for veterans while combating homelessness among ex-military.

In September, she made a post for Suicide Prevention Week recalling how her brother took his own life when she was 14, and encouraged anyone in distress to reach out.

It is still unclear what led to Young’s suicide.

“From the outside looking in it looks like he has it all,” Maine wrote in a separate post. “Mental illness is so prevalent especially among the military. We have to find a way to do better.”

Nearly $25,000 has been raised on Young’s GoFundMe page. The funds will go directly to his daughter.
