US-Canadian border flooded with illegal crossers, more caught in 2023 than 10 years combined

More than 6,100 people from 76 different countries have been caught illegally crossing into the United States along its northeastern border in the past 11 months alone — more than were caught there in the last 10 years combined, US border officials announced.

“Sector Agent Swanton is tough and determined to hold the line,” Patrol Chief Agent Robert Garcia said in a series of social media posts Tuesday.

Garcia’s sector stretches nearly 300 miles across the US-Canada border in New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The announcement included a trail photo showing a group of migrants sneaking through the woods with luggage under the cover of darkness.

Chief Garcia has previously issued warnings about an alarming spike in illegal border crossings this year.

In February he issued a memo calling for the “rapid recovery” of agents sent to his sector from the already flooded southern border, citing a nearly 850% increase in illegal crossings from the previous year since October.

He warned of “tension caused by a surge” “especially of undocumented Mexican immigrants,” according to the memo, obtained by Fox News.

“Chief Garcia was an outstanding agent… If he called for help, we knew we had a problem there,” former Arizona border patrol chief Chris Clem said after the memo was leaked.

It’s unclear how many people have been caught illegally crossing other sectors of the US-Canada border this year. US Customs and Border Protection did not return The Posts’ request for updated data at the time of publication.

The alarming numbers from Garcia’s relatively small swatch of the US border’s more than 5,500 miles show the problem extends far beyond the southern border – where 91,000 people were arrested in August – and has contributed to dire conditions in cities across the US .

Just hours before Chief Garcia released the numbers from the northeast border, New York City Mayor Eric Adams warned that thousands of immigrants brought in from the border would “destroy” the city, and accused the White House of providing “no support” for the crisis. .

“I’ll tell you something, New Yorkers, never in my life have I had a problem that I don’t see an end to. I don’t see an end to this,” Adams said at a town hall on the Upper West Side Wednesday night.

About 110,000 immigrants have arrived in New York City since spring 2022.

Adams has said he expects immigrant housing costs to cost the city more than $12 billion over three years.

Earlier this year New York tried to offer immigrants free bus tickets to Canada, but many were turned away at the Canadian border or stole back across the border after being dissatisfied with the opportunities there.
