US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will suspend operations at international rail crossing bridges in two Texas cities along the southern border in response to a recent resurgence of smuggling organizations using freight trains to move migrants through Mexico to the US border.
In a statement issued on Sunday, CBP officials said that starting at 8 a.m. on December 18, the agency’s Office of Field Operations will suspend operations at the international rail crossing bridges in Eagle Pass and El Paso, Texas to redirect personnel to assist the US. Border Patrol by taking immigrants into custody.
“CBP continues to increase all available resources to safely process immigrants in response to increased levels of immigrant encounters at the Southwest Border, driven by smugglers peddling false information to prey on vulnerable individuals,” the statement said. “After observing the recent resurgence of smuggling organizations moving migrants through Mexico via freight train, CBP is taking additional actions to increase staffing and address this developmentally, including in cooperation with Mexican authorities.”
The move comes just days after thousands of migrants were seen on video, lining the railroad tracks as a freight train passed nearly three hours south of Eagle Pass, Texas.

The Border Patrol has been overwhelmed as they deal with an unprecedented number of migrants, which, last Tuesday, exceeded 10,000 in one day.
The previous week, it was reported that there were 12,000 migrant encounters in one day, breaking the daily record and still at a great level of agents on the ground.

The Biden administration continues to heat up the border crisis from Republicans and Democrats, as well as from state and local officials who claim the president is not providing enough resources.
CBP said it plans to maximize enforcement efforts against any non-US citizens who attempt to use illegal routes or processes to enter the country. Reuters
In its defense, the administration said it was dealing with a hemisphere-wide crisis and had asked Congress for more funding and comprehensive immigration reform, to fix what it called a “broken” system.
The administration has requested an additional $14 billion in emergency supplemental funding from Congress, which includes $1.4 billion for “shelter and services” for immigrants released from DHS custody.
The money is in addition to $800 million handed over to states and non-governmental organizations to help deal with the influx of immigrants released to the US
The funding, however, has stalled in Congress as Republican lawmakers have demanded greater restrictions on asylum and humanitarian parole, calls that some Democrats have rejected.
Discussions are ongoing among Senate Democrats and Republicans and the Biden administration to try and resolve the impasse, and Biden has said he is open to “significant compromise.”
The White House has reportedly expressed openness to sanctions, including Title 42-style removal authorities and expanded detention, but it’s unclear whether that would be supported by Democrats or enough for Republicans — including those in the House — to gain their support.
