Utah man gored and seriously injured by bison he tried to pet admits he’s ‘definitely an idiot in this scenario’

A Utah man was brutally mauled by a bison last month when he went to pet it in a foolish move, he soon realized, that left him with a torn liver and an 8-inch gash.

Halen Carbajal was seriously injured during the spectacular attack, although he admitted he was “an idiot in this scenario” for approaching the bison on his way home from an early Thanksgiving party with his girlfriend.

He saw a herd of bison on a neighbor’s property and decided to take a closer look.

“I am indeed a fool in this scenario. I crossed the fence. I started walking back near the fence,” explained Carbajal to KUTV. “By the time I got back to the fence, he had followed me all the way, and I was like ‘oh that’s pretty cool.’

“I did want to pet her, so I was just being naive about the whole thing, so I did, and yeah she rocked me pretty good.”

He described to the station how the animal dipped its head down just before its horns pierced it and flipped it over. He quickly escaped despite being badly injured.

Carbajal suffered an 8-inch gash in his stomach, broken ribs, a lacerated liver and a bruised lung, according to a GoFundMe page created to help with his medical bills.

He was sent to the ICU where he spent seven days in the hospital and is now recovering at home.

“He just finished a season working with the Utah Conservation Corps and he relies on his physical health for the type of work he does.”

Utah Department of Wildlife Resources spokeswoman Faith Heaton-Jolley told KUTV that because bison look like cattle, there is a common misconception that they are domestic or friendly when in fact they are wild animals that can be aggressive.

“It was definitely a reality check or recognizing my naivety and thinking it would be good to try and touch one, and just realize that you have to have more respect for a big crazy beast like that,” Carbajal told the station.
